On my quieter days, I could live in a snug hobbit hole and eat good food, and when I felt adventurous, I could consort with dwarves and elves and a wizard of two. Not to mention the Ents. I'm not sure I could summon Bilbo's courage to face Smaug or Gollum, but who knows?(less)

My Darlings

A dear friend and advanced reader wrote to me this morning after reading the last page of my soon-to-be-published historical (lots of romance, but no HEA)…”Laura, you broke my heart last night! I finished The Lark about 11:30.” And so I am re-blogging the post below, because I kept a lot of my darlings, my sentimental prose, and it seems to have worked magic:)

Cherie Kephart
“You know you're having a bad week when you call 911, the paramedics come to your house, and one of them notices you've rearranged your furniture.”
Cherie Kephart, A Few Minor Adjustments: A Memoir of Healing

Matt Haig
“She imagined, now, what it would be like to accept herself completely. Every mistake she had ever made. Every mark on her body. Every dream she hadn’t reached or pain she had felt. Every lust or longing she had suppressed. She imagined accepting it all. The way she accepted nature. The way she accepted a glacier or a puffin or the breach of a whale. She imagined seeing herself as just another brilliant freak of nature. Just another sentient animal, trying their best. And in doing so, she imagined what it was like to be free.”
Matt Haig, The Midnight Library

Leigh Bardugo
“The Darkling slumped back in his chair. “Fine,” he said with a weary shrug. “Make me your villain.”
Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone
