J.A. Clement lives near London with her partner and a lunatic lurcher puppy with a predilection for watering cans. She writes her fantasy series whenever she can, mostly in her lunch hour (which probably explains the excessive number of bacon sandwiches that have to be edited out later). Her "To-Write" list is as big as your "To-Read" list (and covers several genres, but she just needs to finish this series first...)

Usually this means that the plot wants to go somewhere that I don't want it to go, and I am singing a happy tune and trying to make it do what it's told. This works with books about as well as it does with teenagers. At that point I have found the best thing to do is go away and do something else unrelated but creative, like cook something intricate or do a load of gardening or just read someone else's books! Then when I come back, having put a bit of distance between me and the problem, it's much easier to see what the answer is. Generally this is that the plot was right all along, which is highly irritating but a sign that the characters have taken on a bit of life, so y'know, silver linings and all that...(less)

Get writing, now! don't wait!

Honestly, this is the most exciting time to be a writer. You have options that have not been available before, in the form of self-publishing and e-publishing and all the variants that are developing along those fronts. But you still have to be excellent, and the way to that is practice, pure and simple. Write. Edit. Pass your stuff to someone impartial to edit. Consider their crits (this is always a bit hard at first but you get used to it quite quickly and it is so, so useful). Then polish, and improve.

Which way you want to get your stories to the market is down to you. I dearly love my indie publishing because I am a massive geek and I find the continual evolution of the technology exhilarating, but on the other hand, I am short of time so I hand on the editing, cover art and formatting to people who are specialised in it (mostly. I dabble a bit myself for the short stories too).

But honestly, if you want to write, start now and keep going. When you're tired, take a specific amount of time off and start again when you've recovered. You're going to love it, I reckon....(less)

#Hellcatsanthology update… my guest blog!

Hello all;

Hope you are all well and surviving in comfort. Between Covid and the wildfires, it all seems like a bit apocalyptic in the states right now, so I’m hoping that you lovely lot are all in safe places but there isn’t too much smoke and definitely no flames!

So the reason I have been quiet for awhile – apart from the usual episode of burnout – is that I was asked if I would like to submit a

“It was a time of dark dreams. They washed in like flotsam on the night tide, slipping beneath doorways and window latches, rising through the streets and hills; and the little fishing-town of Scarlock foundered deep.”
J.A. Clement, On Dark Shores: The Lady

“The skeleton picked up the second skull, so worn as to barely be recognisable as such. The vertebrae fell and rolled like beads from a string.”
J.A. Clement, On Dark Shores: The Lady

Topics Mentioning This Author

“Longed for him. Got him. Shit.”
Margaret Atwood

“Love isn't just about feeling sure of the other person, knowing what he would give up for you. It's knowing with certainty what you are willing to surrender for his sake. Make no mistake; each partner gives up something. Individual dreams are surrendered for a shared one.”
Robin Hobb, The Mad Ship

“The second thing you have to do to be a writer is to keep on writing. Don't listen to people who tell you that very few people get published and you won't be one of them. Don't listen to your friend who says you are better that Tolkien and don't have to try any more. Keep writing, keep faith in the idea that you have unique stories to tell, and tell them. I meet far too many people who are going to be writers 'someday.' When they are out of high school, when they've finished college, after the wedding, when the kids are older, after I retire . . . That is such a trap You will never have any more free time than you do right now. So, whether you are 12 or 70, you should sit down today and start being a writer if that is what you want to do. You might have to write on a notebook while your kids are playing on the swings or write in your car on your coffee break. That's okay. I think we've all 'been there, done that.' It all starts with the writing. ”
Robin Hobb

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”
Cicero

“This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.”
Sid Ziff
