“The first coherent thought that comes to his mind is this: he doesn't know how to live if not constantly on his guard. He doesn't know how to move around a house without cringing at the sound of floorboards creaking underfoot. He doesn't know how to tame a fire that's been burning out of control since before he knew how to speak of it. Max starts to laugh again. When he opens his eyes, both men are staring down at him; Colton seems slightly more baffled, and Overalls looks like he wants to kill them both.
“Is this your first time doing this?” Max asks, once he can catch his breath. “Oh my God, that’s so cute. I thought you were both just really stupid.”
