Yes... I know... I've Got Hot Guys on My Substack. Lemme 'splain, Lucy.
From steamy vampires to sustainable writing strategies — this space has evolved, and so have I. Welcome to Writing Reborn. Whether you’re starting over or just starting out, you’re in the right place.Okay, let’s just address it up front. You’re scrolling through my post history and wondering, “Why are there shirtless vampire heartthrobs all over this feed?”
Fair question. 😅
This Substack used to be home to my paranormal romance world—where brooding immortals, sexy werewolves, and emotionally wounded men with excellent abs roamed free.
And honestly? I regret nothing.
That content still lives here as a tribute to the storytelling magic I adore—and as a case study for you, dear writer, on how to connect with your audience through character-driven, emotionally rich branding. (Hotness optional.)
But today? This feed is reborn.
Because now, it’s also a place for writers like you.
You might be just getting started without a clue where to begin.
Or maybe you've been publishing for years, but you're tired. Disillusioned. Stuck in the churn.
Or maybe you're somewhere in the middle—still figuring out what kind of author you want to be.
Wherever you are, this space is for you.
I’m Arial Burnz, and for the past fifteen years I’ve worn just about every publishing hat there is:
Author.
Editor.
Cover designer.
Instructor.
I’ve coached first-time writers through their very first stories.
I’ve guided seasoned authors through burnout.
I’ve run multi-book launches, built mailing lists from scratch, taught live courses, and—yes—stared at blinking cursors, wondering if I could still do this.
So when I say I understand the emotional and logistical rollercoaster that is the writing life… I mean it.
Why Writing Reborn?Because too many authors are trying to outrun burnout instead of preventing it.
Because the advice out there often feels like this:
“Write faster. Release more. Build your audience. Do it all. And hurry.”
And while strategy does matter—so does your sanity.
I created Writing Reborn as a place where:
Creativity is honored, not rushed.
Your schedule serves your story—not the other way around.
Mindset, craft, and publishing wisdom work together to support you.
And you’re reminded that you don’t need to write like anyone else to be successful.
What to ExpectThis newsletter is still growing—but here’s what’s coming:
Writing tips that are actually doable
Mindset shifts that support (not shame) you
Sustainable publishing advice
Behind-the-scenes posts from my own journey
I’ll also be sharing progress on the Writing Reborn course—a program designed to help you write, revise, and publish at a pace that fits your life.
If You're Still Reading…Then maybe something here resonates with you.
Maybe you’re tired of trying to keep up.
Or maybe you're ready to start, but not sure how.
You don’t need to write a book a month.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You just need to keep going—and find a way to do it that works for you.
That’s what Writing Reborn is here to help with.
Thanks for being here at the beginning.
There’s so much more to come.

Before Thornwood… There Was Burnz
Yes, I kept the towel pic! What kind of monster do you think I am?This is it, darklings — the final post on the Arial Burnz Substack.
Starting Tuesday (April 29th), all future newsletters will come from Gina Thornwood — my new pen name and official home for all things romantasy.
Your email will be automatically migrated over the weekend, so you don’t have to do a thing. Just keep an eye out for Gina’s name in your inbox.
But before we close the book on Burnz… I had to bring one legend back for one final bow.
🩸 Back in 2011, I sat down with Broderick MacDougal — the vampire who started it all. This flirty, fang-filled Q&A sent readers swooning, and the comments? Legendary.
Today, I’m sharing that original interview post in full — completely free, and exactly as it was. Think of it as a love letter to those of you who’ve been with me since the beginning... and an invitation for new readers to meet the rogue behind the dimple.
Broderick MacDougal Interview (2011)
P.S. Want to win a signed copy of the NEW Midnight Conquest ?
Broderick will be back on May 9th with a brand-new in-character interview, and he’s choosing three lucky readers to receive a signed paperback of the book.
All you have to do is comment on that post when it drops.
Note: The giveaway is open to all, but winners will receive their copies once the print version is finalized — likely in June. (If I can get it formatted sooner, I will!)
Until then… mark your calendar, warm up your blush response, and get ready. Rick always brings the heat!
I await Broderick MacDougal—vampire and hero of my debut novel Midnight Conquest. Sitting in the parlor of his fortress, a fire crackles in the hearth heating my skin. A warm orange glow flickers across the stone walls and tapestries. The smell of burning wood is heady, soothing, and I can't resist taking off my shoes.
Gentleman that he is, Broderick does not keep me waiting very long. His 6-foot-3 frame enters the room seducing my attention. The corner of his mouth turns up in a smirk. I draw a deep breath to steady my beating heart. Even though I created this guy, and he's constantly in my head, he never fails to get my blood pumping.
His auburn hair shrouds his shoulders, and the flames reflect his brassy highlights as he saunters across the room. No. Saunters is hardly the word. He glides. With ethereal movements, he stands before me, that tempting dimple creasing his cheek. Cocking a fiery eyebrow, he bends forward, takes my hand, and blesses my knuckles with a sensuous kiss that leaves me in a puddle. A warm chuckle rumbles from him and he sits in the vacant chair.
“You're a rogue,” I accuse. He knows what effect he has on me and exploits it at every opportunity.
The full smile on his handsome face nearly does me in. Leaning back, he crosses his ankle over his knee and settles in for our interview. “You make it too easy, Arial.” He winks, his deep voice like a drug. Could I possibly melt any more? “You hold the advantage tonight, lass. I must confess, your warning about the topics had me both excited and fearful.”
In spite of his words, he maintains a roguish sneer.
“Yes, I have some juicy questions for you to answer, so be prepared to squirm.” I narrow my eyes in a dare.
That same eyebrow rises at my challenge, but he waits for me to begin.
Maybe I'll be the one who ends up squirming! “Our readers don't have much time to spare, so I'm diving right in. What's the first thing you notice about a woman?”
“Two features draw me almost immediately. First, her eyes. I search for that spark of intelligence, a hint of something deeper than her appearance. And then, her mouth. He grins with a dangerous glint as he does just that…gazes at my lips. His deep voice is almost breathy. “Once my eyes go to her mouth, I listen for her heartbeat and her thoughts. If any attraction exists betwixt us, her quickening pulse and forbidden images betray much.”
Yep! You guessed it! My heart's pattering a mile a minute and he wears the most wicked expression on his face. “You are such a bad boy!”
He tips his head back, and his rich laughter fills the room. “’Twas your provocative question, not mine.” He winks again. “Please proceed.”
I deliberate over switching to safer questions, but Broderick shakes his head.
“Finish what you started, Arial.”
I grumble as soft laughter oozes from his full lips.
“Since we're discussing reading thoughts, nosy… Doesn't it get awfully noisy up there?” I tap my temple with the end of my pencil.
“Inside your head, aye!”
His laughter drowns out my protests but he lures me into his amusement. I playfully nudged his knee with my toes.
Roguish smile still in place, he nods. “Aye, at first the noise was difficult to control. I, myself, did not realize how much people think…how many ideas ran through my own head…until I heard the constant rambling of it. I have, over time, learned to quiet the thoughts.
“Being a gypsy fortune teller for so long, and using your immortal gift to read minds, what advice can you give our readers? What wisdom have you gleaned from this experience?”
Broderick leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Most of my clients were women. Men don’t fancy holding hands for a palm reading.” The amusement on his face melts into a softness in his emerald eyes that draws me closer. “I am happy for this opportunity to share my thoughts. Ladies, you are all beautiful, unique creatures. Yet you worry about your appearance and your presentation, and though taking care of yourself is not a fault, you betray your beauty by not being yourselves.”
I am shocked at the whisper of my voice. “Can you clarify that a bit, Rick?”
He nods. “Many women worry more about what other people think, rather than being true to themselves. They alter their behavior based on how they assume others wish to see them, as opposed to allowing their natural personality to emerge. As such, these beautiful creatures hide behind a mask, so they miss the people who would adore them because they are pretending to be someone they are not.” Broderick sits back and rests his elbows on the arms of the chair, steepling his fingers beneath his chin. “I have seen this behavior enough to near break my heart. One can never find true love if they waste their energy on such fruitless pursuits.”
I’m a little taken aback at the heavy warmth in the atmosphere and in his voice. As usual, Broderick MacDougal gains control in unexpected ways.
“You're a guy who tells it like it is, Rick. I've always admired that about you.”
He nods with a hooded gaze and smiles.
“Some of the questions common during most hero interviews don't apply to you, so I can't ask them.” I search through my notes to find the ones that do.
“Such as?”
I chortle. “Boxers or briefs?”
He laughs. “Aye, I wear neither. What do you call that?”
“Commando!” I waggle my eyebrows.
He laughs again. “What other questions?”
“Uh, okay. White, milk, or dark chocolate? You drink blood, so I don't—”
“That does not mean I cannot eat food or do not occasionally partake. I am rather fond of dark chocolate.” That heart-melting dimple emerges beside his lopsided smirk.
“I'm a little surprised. After all, he's my character.. “I didn't know that about you.”
“You never explored that part of me before.” He cocks a challenging eyebrow.
Oh yeah? I rise to the challenge. “What's your favorite erogenous zone on your body?” Ha!
Broderick widens his legs a tad and I can't help but drop my gaze to his groin. Nor can I stop heat from flaming my cheeks as he slides his hands over those powerful thighs, down between his legs...and…uses the pads of his index finger to trace the crease where his...ahem…package and legs meet. I dart my eyes back to his, and his wicked gaze, I fear, has not left my face the entire time.
My mouth suddenly dry, I reach for a glass of water on the small table beside my chair. After a long drink, I clear my throat. “What—” I squeak, and try again. “What's your favorite color?”
“Sapphire blue,” he responds, almost dreamy.
“Ah, the color of Davina’s eyes.”
“Aye.” He sighs. “’Tis a woman who has stirred my blood like no other. I may toy and tease with you, but there will be no other woman like her.” Broderick crosses his ankle over his knee again and, strangely enough, I see color bloom in his cheeks. He shifts in his chair and sports a boyish grin.
“Wow, I wish I could read your thoughts right now,” I tease. “I'm sure they're about her, judging by the way you're blushing and the, um…”
I try to peer around his knee, but he clasps his hands casually across his lap.
“What are you hiding there, Rick?”
Broderick opens his mouth as if to respond, but no words come out. He makes two more attempts to bring forth some witty phrase, but resigns to clamping his mouth shut, a crease marring his brow.
I gasp. “The infamous Broderick MacDougal is speechless. An immortal moment indeed.”
He chuckles. “As you are fond of saying, payback is a bitch.”
That it is! After a tense moment of the air fairly crackling with that oh-so-scrumptious sexuality of his, Broderick rises from his chair, steals my hand, and sears a kiss on my palm, piercing me with his sparkling emerald eyes. My heart quickens when his fangs graze the tender skin of my wrist. His tongue darts out to taste my pulse and my breath quickens. Such a tease!
“As always, your company is entertaining.” He winks, graces me with that lovely dimple and roguish grin, and glides out of the room…leaving me breathless.
Broderick, however, will be available for questions throughout the week, and so will I. We are both standing by with much anticipation. This is a rare opportunity to speak with Rick, ladies, so be sure to take advantage of it! Until then…
That’s my two pence…
Arial :)

>KainsHottie - Greetings, Blossom! I believe my last comment may have addressed your fist question, but I shall be more specific here. I was born April 4th, 1450, in Oban, Scotland… making me 561 years old.
As for my favorite food...through the years I have sampled a wide and wild variety of cuisine, so it is difficult to choose o favourite. I especially enjoy Italian, French and recently have come to enjoy Mexican food during my time in the Los Angeles area and my many trips to Mexico. In all honestly. I admit dork chocolate is a weakness of mine. Not just for the bittersweet flavour, but there is so much you can do with chocolate. Let us leave that to our imagination...shall we? ;)
Humbly yours,

Dearest Poison Rose,
Aye, lass, she was quite a site to behold...especially since I just had a randy time with her in my dream! Still aroused from the imaginary coupling, I was ready to take her where she stood. However, though I am a rogue, as Arial reminds me often, I do not believe I am as brash to take advantage of the weakness of mortal women. I prefer seduction as a tool.
The most curious point, though, is Vamsyrians (now known today as vampires) do not dream, and yet with her, I did. And dampening that arousal were the images I saw in her mind of my enemy and clan rival - Angus Campbell. Aye, quite sobering to be sure. But I am revealing too much about my tale. I shan’t spoil the story
I do hope you are enjoying MIDNIGHT CONQUEST. I will admit, I have never thought to play with Poisoned Rose. Perhaps there is something I am missing, ay lass? ;)
Yours eternal,
Rick

Unwrap the Vampire Rogue 🖤
This week, I’m opening the vault...
A little teaser of what’s to come. Mwuahahaha!Back in 2011—when Midnight Conquest first hit the digital shelves—I sat down with a certain 561-year-old vampire for his very first interview. What followed was a flirty, fang-filled Q&A that had readers swooning, blushing, and jumping into the comments to flirt with Broderick themselves.
That interview hasn’t been seen in years... until now.
This Friday, I’m re-releasing the original character interview with Broderick MacDougal—unedited, uncensored, and full of roguish charm. It’s a perfect throwback for longtime readers and a swoon-worthy introduction for those just meeting Rick.
And yes...
He still prefers to go commando. 😏
You don’t need to be a paid subscriber to access this one—it's free for everyone as part of our celebration of the relaunch under Gina Thornwood.
So if you're new here, or just want to relive the vampire who started it all, make sure you're subscribed to the new coven:

Get ready to step into the past... and fall for Rick all over again. Until then, check out my author pal deals and steals below.

Featured Book - by Kris Bock
Geologist Petra Cloch can touch an object and sense the emotions of the people who’ve held it. It’s a miserable way to live. She studied rocks because they rarely ‘talk’ to her and she’s dodged friendships so she won’t need to explain her gift or feel like a voyeur. But when she takes a job as the rock and mineral curator at an unusual western history museum and picks up a jagged crystal in her new office, flashes of rage, fear and death hit hard.
Everyone says her predecessor died in a car crash, but what if he was murdered? Under normal circumstances, Petra would never become involved, but what if the previous curator died because of something he did on the job? She could be next. Petra knows she’ll need evidence, not her psychic sense she hides. Can she trust her chatty colleagues who invite her to lunch and to join a book club? And what about the far too watchful Sheriff who keeps showing up unexpectedly…
“A good old-fashioned murder mystery with a twist. The supernatural elements make this book interesting. It was suspenseful and kept you guessing until the end… Good read.”
“I really enjoyed the intro to all the people in this small community. So many interesting characters.”

Broderick has a secret… And Davina stole something...
Hey, Witchlings!
For those new to my list, I’ve recently announced that I have completely rewritten Midnight Conquest - Book 1 of my Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles. If you’d like the deets on why, click on this post preview right here… 👇
In the original version of Midnight Conquest, Broderick always wanted Davina.
But in the new version?
He’s darker. Hungrier. More dangerous.
Broderick isn’t just the charming rogue anymore — he’s every inch the possessive, predatory vampire hero who knows what he wants... and takes it.
And Davina?
She’s running out of options.
It’s 1514 Scotland, and as a woman, Davina can’t legally own property, sign contracts, or run her family’s business without a husband. Her uncle is parading suitors through her home, eager to marry her off.
So Davina strikes a dangerous bargain.
She hires the Gypsy rogue, Broderick MacDougal, to use his mind-reading abilities to scare off her suitors — and he agrees.
But his price?
Not coin.
Not blood.
Her.
In his bed.
At his mercy.
And she doesn’t leave until he says she’s free.
Broderick thought claiming her body would satisfy his hunger.
He never expected her to steal his heart.
And this Friday, paid subscribers will get an exclusive first look at the moment it all began — the scene where Davina offers him a deal, and Broderick names his price. Spoiler: By popular demand, I’ve rewritten Broderick to have a nice strong Scottish brogue!
Here’s a super-micro-teeny-tiny sneak peek…
She stopped just shy of his reach, the hood casting her face in shadow. “I’d like a palm reading.”
His chuckle was low and knowing. “A palm reading,” he echoed, voice dipping into something darker. “Aye, is that what we’re callin’ it these days?”
Her chin tilted, just enough to show defiance. “I’ve coin, if that’s what it takes.”
His grin widened, feral as a wolf’s. “Keep yer coin, mistress.” He stepped aside, sweeping the tent flap open. “Come inside. Let’s see what yer fate has to say.”

Tarot. Trouble. True love?
Lexi Landry, half Werewolf, half Witch — with zero skills — has eked out a life on the fringe of New Orleans supernatural society. But now the spells protecting her have faded, and her feral wolf has slipped her leash.
When Lexi frees The Hierophant: an ancient, non-corporeal entity from a tarot card deck, he gifts her the power of persuasion. Convincing the sexy Werewolf Alpha, Clint Pontalba, who once rejected her, to be her bodyguard and help her wolf, is easy, thanks to her new ability.
With The Hierophant at work, it’s impossible to tell what’s obedience — and what’s true love. Her secret may jeopardize a second chance with her mate, but to her it’s worth the risk.
A happily ever after for these two seems Unlikely.
This is book one in the G.R.I.T.S., Love & The Paranormal series — a clean romance that ticks every magical box.

Ryan Mallardi is a young private investigator trying to get his relationship with Angelica on track for marriage, but things keep going awry. 🗡 The Blade That Cuts Both Ways
It’s cover reveal day!!!! And I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally share this with you.
Rewriting Midnight Conquest wasn’t just about plot and pacing — it was about reclaiming my voice. My brand. My soul.
This is where I plant my flag in the shadowed soil of Dark Fantasy and say, this is home.
I’ve been writing this way my whole life… I just didn’t know what to call it until now. I always thought I was writing paranormal romance — and yes, there’s romance. Yes, there are vampires. Yes, there’s steam. But…
My heroes were always edgier.
My villains were always darker.
And I liked my heroes dangerous.
If the villain had to die at the hero’s hand, then he damn well better deserve it — because my heroes? They don’t wear white hats. They wield silver swords and vengeance and they don’t flinch when they draw blood.
This is your first peek. But there’s more. So much more...Black roses have always meant one thing to me: dark love. Vampire love.
The kind that sinks its teeth into your soul and refuses to let go.
And the sword?
That’s not just a fancy fantasy weapon. It’s Broderick’s silver-plated blade, forged for one purpose: to kill the vampire who made him a monster. The man who stole his humanity. The one he must destroy to protect the woman who unknowingly owns his heart.
But there's one detail hiding in this cover that, if you’re not looking closely, you just might miss it…

What if you could rewrite the past… and make it right?
Hey Witchlings! 🖤
Okay, I’m officially the worst at surprise reveals, so I’m just gonna let the cat out of the bag…
✨ I rewrote
Midnight Conquest
— and it’s better, bolder, and more magical than ever. For those of you new to my newsletter and books, Midnight Conquest is the first book in my Dark Fantasy / Historical Paranormal Romance series - the Bonded By Blood Vampire Chronicles.
Also… meet the new me. 👋
Starting now, I’ll be publishing under my new pen name:
Gina Thornwood — USA Today bestselling author of dark fantasy and historical paranormal romance.
Why the change? Because Arial Burnz kept autocorrecting to a redheaded mermaid, and after 15+ years of battling Amazon’s search bar, it was time to step into a name that truly reflects my brand. (Think moody gothic romance with a sharp bite.)
So yes — I’m still me.
Still writing broody vampires, badass heroines, and stories with teeth.
Just doing it under the name I should’ve started with all along.
Welcome to the Thornwood era. 🌹
🧛♂️ Why Now? Why the Revamp?Because sometimes… the only way forward is through a rewrite.
When I first published Book 1 over 15 years ago, I didn’t know what I was doing structurally — and I definitely didn’t realize how much weight the first book carries. It’s the gateway to an entire series I love — and yet it wasn’t doing justice to the world, the heroine, or the deliciously dangerous man at its core.
So I gave it a second chance.
A do-over, which as been long overdue!
And trust me… this version? It’s the one I was meant to write all along.
💥 Davina’s not a leaf in the wind anymore.
She’s smart, fierce, and fights for what’s hers.
🖤 Broderick’s still a rogue…
But now he’s her partner in crime, helping her dodge unwanted suitors in 1514 Scotland — with tension you could cut with a dirk. (No, not dick. Dirk. It’s a knife.)
🌙 Stewart Glen finally feels real.
Wool merchants. Family empires. Battle fallout. And yes — vampires and lust and secrets galore.
🔄 And longtime fans?
This is your Easter egg hunt. I tucked elements from Book 6 back into Book 1. 👀
If you’ve ever wished you could:
Get a second chance at love…
Be seen for who you truly are…
Fall for someone dangerous who’d burn the world to protect you…
Or become the powerful woman everyone underestimated…
Then you’re going to love what’s coming…
🎭 Just wait ‘til you see the new covers…
Every rose, every relic, every shadowed blade — they all have meaning.
I’ll be revealing what’s behind the designs for the series starting next week.
