“The Library” as an Artistic Inspiration
One of the most prominent contemporary Turkish artists, Engin Beyaz, presented his new series of paintings inspired by Zoran Živkovic’s mosaic novel The Library (World Fantasy Award 2003) at the exhibition just opened in the very prestigious Presidential National Library (Cumhurbaskanligi Millet Kütüphanesi) in Ankara.
“The library is not just a place where books are lined up, but also a memory space where thoughts and dreams accumulate layer by layer. The library is not only the architect of the past, but also of the present and the future. Inspired by Zoran Živković’s work The Library (Başka Zaman Kütüphaneleri in Turkish), Engin Beyaz sees books not as dull objects, but as entities that change shape over time: texts floating in time, voids that can never be fully filled, and images oscillating between existence and nothingness… The artist redefines the act of reading not only through letters, but also through objects, shadows, and senses. The works, which avoid crashing into dreams but ultimately dive into them, wander on the very boundaries of dual existence.”
