2022 I'm currently in Istanbul, Turkey an amazing city for a writer who sees plots everywhere. I left Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a town of hot humid days and sultry passionate nights, in early 2019 to travel the world. Istanbul was a two-day layover in a multi-country trip of several months. But I fell in love with Istanbul and a Turk. After I used up all my one-way tickets, I let my heart lead the way and came back to Istanbul. CAFE CONFIDENTIAL is that story! https://amzn.to/3dKBAWA

I write spy/mystery, romantic suspense, memoir, and poetry. I've been accused of writing based-on-real-events-and-character stories in my Code Raven Series. I will definitely admit that there are a few real-life characters and events in each one of my books! But

Lynda Filler I love this question! All my fictional writings have basis in my own life. It would be entirely too dangerous to explain precisely which parts.

Hey Jason,
Hi, thanks for stopping by!
That's a great question (as Miss America would say while she ponders a respectable answer). I received criticism on my first JET-Exposed book about editing. More typos possibly. I'm not sure if it was valid but it was nasty. The funny part about the review was the reviewer's grammar was atrocious. However, what I learned from it is it's human nature to hear 5 great things and accept them, but the one bad makes your head spin.
I read some terrible reviews recently on a new book by a super successful author. Most reviews were 5 star but this one said it was time she stopped writing. Her tired old storyline is overdone and pathetic... or something delightful like that. You have to laugh.
Russell Blake said if the reviewer is correct and it's technical, fix it, and move on. (less)

wow!

It’s a challenging read. The horror of living through an earthquake and the writing the story must have been traumatic.
Jacky takes us with her through the shocks, and aftershocks… An incredible experience

Elmore Leonard
“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing

1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
Elmore Leonard

Rafael Amadeus Hines
“For me, there's nothing better than when I become the funnel, and have that out of body experience where I'm not the one writing anymore. At that point, it's all about bladder control. Sitting back and watching scenes, characters, and dialogue appear out of nowhere, and fear of breaking the spell makes you hold in your pee for six or eight hours is the best thing about being a writer.”
Rafael Amadeus Hines, Bishop's War

Elmore Leonard
“My most important piece of advice to all you would-be writers: When you write, try to leave out all the parts readers skip.”
Elmore Leonard, Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing

Lewis Carroll
“Begin at the beginning," the King said, very gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop.”
Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Neil Gaiman
“Life is a disease: sexually transmitted, and invariably fatal.”
Neil Gaiman
