When thinking back to that year, I began to imagine that other people might have had a horrid time then too. Then I read a story about a big country house burning down and I decided to merge the two together. For me, family relationships and dynamics are eternally fascinating. I thought it would be interesting to explore the different ways in which grief might affect two fictional siblings, particularly the sense that while loss is devastating, it can also be liberating in a strange kind of way.(less)

Be Mine was everything that I was hoping for from the latest (last?) Frank Bascombe novel. Frank is, as ever, whimsical and funny, doing his best, which is never quite good enough.
