Although Sally Whitney has spent most of her adult life in other parts of the United States, her imagination lives in the South, the homeland of her childhood. “Whenever I dream of a story,” she says, “I feel the magic of red clay hills, magnolia trees, soft voices, sudden thunder storms, and rich emotions. The South is a wonderland of mysteries, legends, and jokes handed down through generations of family storytellers, people like me.”

Sally is a fan of stories in almost any medium, including literature, theater, and film. She’d rather spend an afternoon in the audience across from the footlights than anywhere else, and she thinks DVDs and streaming movies are the greatest inventions since the automobile. When she tried to open the door, she realized the inside latch was painted shut and wouldn't turn. (less)

My grandfather had been to church on a cold Sunday night in the early 1900s and was driving his horse and buggy back to his farm in the dark. He was moving along slowly when suddenly he heard the sound of another buggy rushing up behind him like a bat out of hell. The horse's hooves were pounding and rocks were flying from the dirt road. He knew there was nobody behind him, but suddenly the other buggy barreled past him. He hardly had time to look at the driver before the horse and buggy flew ahead of him and disappeared. He swore till he died that it was a ghost. (less)

Tayari Jones—The Aura of Brilliance

Only rarely do most of us find ourselves in the presence of brilliance. Last Sunday I was fortunate to attend a presentation by the brilliant Tayari Jones, author of four novels, including Silver Sparrow and the recent Oprah’s Book Club selection An American Marriage. Let me assure you she is equally gifted both behind the keyboard and in front of a crowd. She held us all spellbound from the time

An excellent novel about life in Maine in 1789. A remarkable heroine with definitely feminist views, way ahead of her time.
