Meet author Yvonne Morgan

Today, Yvonne Morgan is on my blog! She is a new author to me, so let’s dive in and learn more about her!

Jen – Hi Yvonne, tell us about yourself.

Yvonne – Thanks, Jen, and I’m so happy to be part of your blog. Well, I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. We immigrated to Canada when I was one year old and stayed in Canada until I was twelve. In the US, I’ve lived in Michigan, Florida, Texas, Virginia, and now in Oklahoma. My husband and I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary this year, and we have five children and five grandchildren.

A situation that increased my faith happened many years ago. The youngest child, William, was born in 1993 and died nine days later. Our lives changed forever that day. Fast forward a few years, and I went on a mission trip to Haiti and worked with vulnerable children. When I came home, I knew God was calling me to something. Over the next few years, the calling became more defined to working with orphans in other countries. We started a charity that we still run today. Along the way, God also called me to write about the experiences, and that is when my writing career began.

Yvonne’s books

Jen – I do believe God uses our most challenging times to grow us. Tell us about what you’ve written.

Yvonne – I started writing about ten years ago, and my first book was a memoir about the mission work with the orphans over a twenty-year period. Since that time, I’ve written seven more books. All of them are Christian works. Three are non-fiction works, three are children’s books, and one is fiction. All my books are available on Amazon and other online retailers. You can find lots more details about me and my books on my website, https://yvonne-morgan.com.

Yvonne Morgan’s bio:

Yvonne M. Morgan is a Christian author, blogger, and storyteller with a passion for inspiring faith and compassion through her writing. She is the author of heartfelt children’s books, including Mary the Missionary: A Kenyan Adventure, as well as Christian devotionals and inspirational works for adults. Drawing from her experiences in global mission work, Yvonne weaves stories that encourage readers—both young and old—to live with purpose, kindness, and a heart for serving others. When she’s not writing, Yvonne advocates for orphans and vulnerable children through Orphan Relief Effort, sharing God’s love across cultures and generations.

Writing habits

Jen – Do you have a certain time of day to write? Do you follow an outline? Are you a plotter or a pantser? I want to know all of the writerly things!

Yvonne – Most of the time, I write in the morning on my laptop. I’m a pantser in my writing. And I do lots of praying before I write so I can stay connected with God and let Him direct my thoughts and words; then I dive in.

I keep a file on my phone, and when an idea strikes me for a blog or a book, I make a note about it. And that is where I get many of my ideas. My children’s books came about once the grandkids started showing up. I wanted to make sure they had some Christian-based resources. I wrote my fiction book because I thought it would be fun to try my hand at it.

What kind of research does Yvonne Morgan do?

Jen – Did you have to do research for your story? If so, what did you find most interesting?

Yvonne – Since my blog and several books are based on Christian nonfiction works, lots of my research revolves around the Bible. I love digging into verses, the story behind them, and the context in which they were written. I’ve learned so much from all the studying. In fact, I put it to work and created a self-published book with lots of my research from the Old Testament.

Jen – That’s exciting! Lots of work, but well worth it. What are your goals for what you write?

Yvonne – The main reason I write is to share Christ with others, whether it’s showing how He worked out problems in my life or lessons He taught me. I believe God gives us stories so we can share them with others and to help strengthen their faith.

Book Yvonne loves to read

Jen – I think that’s true too. I love how He does that! What are your favorite things to read?

Yvonne – I love to read and mainly read fiction works. I loved Francine Rivers’ book Redeeming Love and Ahoti by Eva Marie Everson. Most of the nonfiction works I read are based on true-life stories or ones that help me dig deeper into my faith.

For my writing skills, I attend Christian writing conferences to improve my skills, but I use The Emotion Thesaurus often to help me strengthen my word usage.

Jen – I also use The Emotion Thesaurus. Recently, I found out about a book called Dialogue Descriptors to Build On that sounds very helpful too!

Where to find Yvonne

Jen – Where can readers find you online?

Yvonne – I am on all the main social media platforms, and the readers can connect with me through my website at https://yvonne-morgan.com

Fun facts & advice to new authors

Jen – One thing I love to ask authors is for some fun facts about themself!

Yvonne – A fun fact is that I love to travel. I’ve been to all 50 states and 45 countries. One goal is to hit 50 countries before God calls me home. So, in my free time, I travel as much as possible. Luckily, I’m retired from the business world, so I have more free time than I did in the past.

My favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:28 (NIV): “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” And I have seen this come true in my life repeatedly.

Jen – What advice would you give to a new author?

Yvonne – Don’t give up. Writing is hard, and getting something published is even harder. I almost gave up when I got my first edits back on my first book. The number of edits and comments felt very discouraging, but once you learn they want to make your book the best it can be, you realize it is a necessary evil, lol.

Why Yvonne Morgan began writing

Jen – One last question, what inspired you to start writing?

Yvonne – I never expected to write professionally. After many years of short-term mission work, I felt God nudge me to write stories about my experiences. My age and lack of writing credentials made the idea seem comical. The nudge didn’t stop. I ask God to confirm the nudge through my husband. About a month later, Bill and I watched TV. He looked over at me and asked how my book was coming along. I cried, and he asked me why, and I told Bill the story. “I guess you’re writing a book,” he said.

Jen – Thanks, Yvonne, for being on my blog! It was fun to get to know more about you!

Mistletoe and Malice by Lori DeJong

Mistletoe and Malice, what a great title! I’m excited to have my writing buddy, Lori DeJong, back on my blog to tell us all about her newest novel. Let’s dive right in (I have so many questions!).

**This page contains affiliate links. If you choose to purchase after clicking a link, I may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Jen – Welcome back, Lori! Tell us all about your newest book!

Lori Mistletoe and Malice is my first romantic suspense and the first in my new Guarded Hearts Series. My first three novels were strictly contemporary romance. But I had such a great time with these characters. It’s a story featuring a strong, independent heiress-slash-defense attorney who’s become the target of an unknown threat, and the reluctant bodyguard assigned to protect her who isn’t thrilled about spending his days with a spoiled society princess. Their views of the other begin to change as the days turn into weeks and the danger circles closer. When an attempt on her life almost succeeds, Colton has a tough choice to make, one that could change the course of both their lives.

Jen – I love the title! Romantic suspense is quickly becoming a favorite genre to read. It’s a fantastic cover too. Christmasy plus suspense. Check it out!

Mistletoe and Malice:

He’s sworn to protect her . . . but guarding his heart may be his biggest challenge.

After barely escaping an attempted abduction, Houston attorney Riley Hudson is forced to accept her wealthy father’s demand for private security. The last thing she wants is a bodyguard—especially one as maddeningly arrogant, bossy … and handsome as Colton Blankenship. Yet as the threat against her escalates, she begins to rely not only on his skills, but his steadfast presence.

Colton isn’t thrilled about giving up his hard-earned holiday vacation to protect a spoiled heiress. But he soon learns Riley is nothing like he expected. Fierce, independent, and unwavering in her faith, she’s everything he thought he’d left behind after tragedy shattered his own beliefs. As the unknown threat circles closer, the tension between them ignites into something deeper … and far more perilous.

When a second attempt on Riley’s life nearly succeeds, Colton faces a terrifying truth. Protecting her means risking more than just his life. Haunted by a past he can’t outrun, and a faith he’s all but lost, he must decide if he can trust God again … before he loses Riley—and his heart—for good.

Lori and ideas for her books

Jen – As a fellow writer, I always want to know how other authors come up with ideas.

Lori – I’m kind of all over the place. I love to people-watch, especially at the airport. So many possibilities! Where are they going? Where have they been? What is their relationship to the person they’re with? I also like to touch on current cultural themes that delve into some deep places. I get a lot of ideas from hearing other people’s true stories of overcoming addiction, breaking free of abuse, healing from abandonment, among others. If I find it inspiring or compelling, oftentimes a loose story concept or plot will start to form in my mind.

Jen – I love people watching! And, I really enjoy writing and reading stories of people overcoming things. So encouraging.

Questions on writing style

Jen – My next question – do you plot your novels? And question #2, do you do a rough draft?

Lori – I don’t. At least, not the full book. I usually have a loose plot in mind, then start my character development. I’m a very character-driven author, and as I’m fleshing out my protagonists, the plot will usually fill out. I’m not a plotter, but I’ll identify the five main plot points of the story and then write intuitively (by the seat of my pants) from plot point to plot point. My first draft is pretty rough, then during editing, I add the layers of emotion, setting, description, the senses. That’s also when I determine if something isn’t moving the story forward. I don’t think I’ve had a book yet where I didn’t pull out entire chapters because they weren’t compelling. That’s painful, but it’s necessary to keep the story engaging.

Jen – That sounds painful!

Dealing with writer’s block

Jen – What is the hardest part for you in writing a book?

Lori – Sticking with it when your characters go silent. Otherwise known as writer’s block. It’s tempting to just put it away and come back later, but when you’re writing on deadline, you don’t have that luxury. You have to keep going even if you’re not sure where you’re going. I’ll often just do a non-essential scene where I ask my characters some questions or put them in a situation outside of the story to see how they react. That sounds odd to a non-writer, but it really works to get those voices going again.

Lori DeJong

Lori DeJong (pronounced DeeYung) is an award-winning contemporary Christian romance author who enjoys penning stories full of grace and the redemptive power of God’s love that inspire others to hope regardless of circumstance, find joy in the moment, and grow in their faith.

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Lori arrived in Texas in 2005 and dug those roots right in. She currently resides in beautiful Georgetown, north of Austin, with her husband of thirty years. Other than their two fur-babies, their nest is empty, as their daughter and son-in-law are settled in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

Lori loves to write about love and romance and all that fun stuff, with a firm foundation of faith. Clean but sassy, sparkly, and even goose-bumpy romance, with God in the middle and characters seeking and learning and changing, couldn’t be more heartwarming or spine-tingly.

Lori’s debut novel, Love’s True Calling, released in 2023, was the 2022 winner of the ACFW Genesis Award for Romance, a double finalist in the 2024 Selah Awards, and was named the 2023 Scrivenings Press Contemporary Book of the Year. Love’s True Home, released in June 2024, was also a Selah finalist. Love’s True Measure, released in June 2025, won second place in the Angel Awards, and Lori’s Christmas novella, Jingle Bell Matchmakers, a part of “A Match Made at Christmas” novella collection, was named a 2025 ACFW Carol Award finalist and placed first in the Angel Awards.

Lori’s writing career

Jen – Were there pivotal moments or challenges in your writing career that helped define your path?

Lori – I actually quit writing in 2009 due to some upheaval in our personal life. My husband was laid off, I couldn’t continue to pay dues for my writers’ groups, and I had to go back to work. I was mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted through that and just simply didn’t have the mental bandwidth for creativity. It wasn’t until 2019 that I met a woman at church who is a writer, told her I used to write and was considering starting again. She invited me to her local ACFW group, and the fire started burning again. I spent 2020 re-educating myself because so much had changed in the years I lost, but the biggest blessing out of all of that was that my debut novel, that released in 2023, came from homework for an online class I did on plotting using your characters’ motivations. I hadn’t planned on writing it, but those character voices I mentioned wouldn’t stop jabbering at me to write their book. So I did, and here we are, four books later. God has been very good.

Jen – Yes, He is!

Rejection and criticism

Jen – How do you deal with criticism or rejection?

Lori – You mean after I have a good cry? Haha! Actually, that’s not far from the truth. I cry easily, and I’ve had my share of good cries over rejection, bad contest scores, even bad critiques. I have the most wonderful critique partners, so I know if they’re pointing out something, then it really is something that isn’t working. But after getting the frustration out, I just dig back in, ask God to guide me, and start writing. You always have to get back up, or you’ll never know what you could’ve accomplished.

Jen – That’s good advice. If you don’t try, or keep trying, you’ll never know.

What comes after Mistletoe and Malice? 🌿🍒

Jen – What are you working on now?

Lori – The Quiet Watch is book two of the Guarded Hearts series and features Trevor from book one. I threw him into a tailspin from the first page, which has him retreating to the little town and family ranch where he was raised but left sixteen years before. There, he reconnects with Kinsley, the little sister of his boyhood best friend. She’s a large-animal veterinarian, and it’s not long before he realizes somebody’s trying to run her off her land. She refuses his offer to call in help from the security services company he works for, so he decides to covertly keep an eye on things, without her knowledge. What he doesn’t anticipate is how quickly she works her way into his heart, and at the worst possible time, when he’s not sure what his future holds.

Jen – I can’t wait to read it!

In Lori’s “spare” time

Jen – My last question – What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Lori – I love watching competition shows on Food Network. The holiday baking shows are my favorite, along with Guy’s Grocery Games.

Jen – Those are so fun! I’ve been watching the British Baking Show. Great distraction from writing! I’m happy you were on the blog today and shared more about Mistletoe and Malice. It’s already on my TBR!

Meet author Maryruth Dilling

Maryruth Dilling is a new author to me! Let’s jump right in and get to know her.

Jen – Hi Maryruth! Tell us a little about yourself.

Maryruth – I grew up in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, the oldest of three girls. Back in 2002, I decided to take off with my youngest son. I told my family I was heading to the hills of Kentucky, but a few days before we left, I did the finger thing on the map and ended up heading to Butte, Montana. We were going to Kalispell. However, by the time we reached Butte, my son was tired of being in the car. We stayed right there. We were there for three weeks before I told my family where we were.

This changed my life in ways I never imagined.

After 2 ½ years, we moved to ID. I became myself while living in the North ID; I came into my own, as many would say. I found a deeper relationship with God, I found healing, I found friendships like never before, and I discovered my calling.

More about Maryruth

Jen – I love that you found who you are in God.

Maryruth – Yes, the event that increased my faith in God was when I was totally disabled due to Lyme disease. God blessed in amazing ways. I had to give up control of my life to Him. Over the past ten years, He has restored my health and led me to help others.

I’ve experienced miraculous happenings where God protected me when I was homeless in a tent. A major windstorm was blowing tree limbs down. But everything of mine, even to the red Solo cup on my car, was not touched. When I saw the destruction and the protection of my belongings, I cried. I knew that God was there and would never leave me.

Maryruth Dilling and writing

Writing habits

Jen – I’m a former homeschool mom and lesson creator too! I always like to ask other writers about their writing habits. Are you a plotter or a pantser? When do you write?

Maryruth – I normally do my writing after my morning devotions. For my presentations, I may create a short outline. I will make a loose outline for my non-fiction works. For my fiction, I’m a pantser. I may jot down a few ideas, but I mainly allow the characters to carry me along.

Of course, this has led me to having to go back and totally change the story when a secondary character took over as the main character.

I’m bombarded by ideas daily. I do not have the time to flesh them all out. I will often create a short post to share on social media with the idea of later going back and creating a longer work.

Book Blurb – Watch and Pray: Preparing for Translation

In an age of deception, distraction, and spiritual crisis, God is calling His people to wake up, stand firm, and prepare for translation. Watch and Pray: Preparing for Translation is a collection of deeply grounded Bible study guides designed to strengthen faith, expose subtle end-time deceptions, and inspire a life of holiness and readiness for Christ’s return.

Each study unpacks key prophetic and practical topics — from the influence of Jesuit theology and modern compromise, to the true nature of sanctification, worship, and the latter rain experience. Written with clarity and conviction, these studies lead readers to examine their hearts, redeem the time, and anchor their lives fully in the Word of God.

This is more than a study guide — it’s a spiritual preparation manual for those who long to stand with the Lamb in the final conflict and be ready for translation when He comes.

Maryruth’s inspiration for writing

Jen – What inspired you to start writing?

Maryruth – I started dictating stories to my older cousin when I was 6. I cannot remember a time when I was not ‘writing.’ As soon as I learned how to hold a pencil, I started writing stories. They were not the best, but I was writing.

I remember when I was 6, we decided we were going to be famous authors. I would tell him the story. He would be my ‘scribe.’

My career goal at that time was to be a missionary to Africa and write children’s books. (I thought Africa was the only place missionaries went.) Although I was only six, many years later, through the power of the internet, I am a missionary to Africa. I have written children’s books.

Research & goals for Maryruth Dilling

Jen – That’s true! It’s so fun to see how God works those things out. Do you have to do research for what you write?

Maryruth – I do have a fiction WIP. I’m using this as a vehicle to educate about natural healing methods. Yes, I research, but most of the research has been done over decades. The Title: Returning to the Old Paths. It’s a Christian Dystopian novel.

I do a lot of research for my various health training presentations.

Jen – What are your goals when you write?

Maryruth – Why do I write? I cannot not write. It’s hard-wired into my DNA, like teaching is.

Who do I wish to reach? I know we should have one focus group, but I write on different topics. Some topics are on education/parenting. My main focus are parents who have children with challenges.

My health writing: Women in their 40s-50s who are beginning to experience the negative results of their lifestyle choices and are willing to do whatever it takes to get better, and reclaim their health.

I share my experience with Lyme disease. This is to reach out and help those going through the same thing. To give hope.

My Rabbit Trails: My goal here is to reach believers who want to be prepared for the end times we are facing. Who wants to stand victorious when Christ returns.

My overall goal is to educate, challenge, and encourage people to make the needed lifestyle changes to improve mental and physical wellness. Time is short. To be able to withstand what is coming, we must do all we can to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God so He can finish the work in fitting us for heaven. (Rom 12:1-2)

What Maryruth reads 🔖

Jen – What do you like to read?

Maryruth – I am an information junkie. I’m working on thinning out the information I collect, but I read voraciously.

I used to read more fiction. I would read authors like Catherine Anderson and Nora Roberts, along with about a dozen others. Then I switched to Christian fiction only. I got hooked on Christian historical fiction. My favorite time period is the last half of the 1800s. Now, I’m very selective in the fiction I read. There are only half a dozen authors whose characters experience real spiritual growth. (I only read these if they are historical in timeline. I do not read contemporary authors.) I’ve also begun reading biblical fiction.

The bulk of my reading is non-fiction. I read about natural health, study herbal remedies, edible/medicinal plants. I read books about biblical topics, church outreach/ministry, and I read books about educating God’s method. Also, I read about improving my business and outreach.

For my writing, I’ve been involved with a couple of writers’ groups for many years now. I read books by Terry Whalin, Cecil Murphey, and other writers (Stephen King). I’m usually reading at least one writing technique book.

⏰ Time for fun facts!

Maryruth’s advice for new writers

Jen – What would you tell a new writer?

Maryruth – Write. Write something every day. Don’t worry about editing in the beginning. Just get words down on paper. It’s called ‘Butt in chair’ time. After you have something written, find a critique group. Become involved. Ask questions. Share your own thoughts with others. (Do not be selfish. Be there to help others grow, too.) Lastly, join Toastmasters.

Many years ago, my online writers’ group talked about the importance of effective speaking being linked to success. They recommended Toastmasters. I followed the advice. Clean fall reads you’ll love (no spice, just cozy vibes)

Are you looking for some clean fall reads?

When the leaves begin changing colors and the temperature drops, there’s nothing better than curling up with a cozy blanket, a mug of something warm (coffee for me!), and good books–clean fall reads!

Fall is a great time to slow down, savor quiet moments, and maybe lose yourself in a story or two.

“In the golden light of fall, we see the reflection of God’s goodness, shining even in the midst of life’s transitions.”

If you love the idea of clean fall reads, I have some great books for you!

As summer gives way to Autumn, the inn is returning to its grandeur. A handsome guest sets out to challenge Elise at every turn. She knows the wealthy narcissistic type…or does she?

Luke Donovan is ready to trade banking for bon appetit with hopes of opening a bistro in a charming town he spent summers fishing with his dad and grandfather. But a chance reconnection and a century-old scarf may open Taryn’s eyes to the larger forces at work in her life.

More clean fall reads:🍂 Their Burden to Bear by Heather Tabers

Genre: Christian historical romance

In the shadow of a grieving nation, two broken souls are bound by duty, drawn together by circumstance, and tested by a love neither expected.

Washington, D.C., 1921. As America prepares to honor the first Unknown Soldier, Elsie St. Clair longs for freedom from her father’s cruel control and the chance to build a life of her own. Instead, she is forced into the spotlight of the upcoming ceremonies when she’s chosen to serve as companion to Gunnery Sergeant Phillip Pierce—a decorated Marine tasked with bearing the Unknown Soldier to his final rest.

Phillip is a war hero, but the medals pinned to his chest weigh heavy with loss and unspoken pain. To Elsie, his quiet strength and battle-hardened scars stir a hope she thought long dead: the hope of being truly seen and loved. Yet danger shadows their every step—from subtle whispers in the capital to the schemes of a jealous rival determined to come between them.

When Phillip offers Elsie a marriage of convenience, it seems a practical way to shield her from harm and keep his own heart untouched. But as they raise her orphaned nephew together, friendship blossoms into a tender bond neither can deny. Still, secrets from the past threaten to shatter the fragile peace they’ve found, forcing them to decide if they will cling to silence—or risk everything for the kind of love that bears all things.

🍁 At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon

Genre: Gentle contemporary fiction

It’s easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won’t go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that’s sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

🍂 Gobble, Gobble Murder by Leslie Meier

Genre: Amateur sleuths/holiday fiction

Turkey Day Murder
Tinker’s Cove has a long history of Thanksgiving festivities, from visits with TomTom Turkey to the annual Warriors high school football game and Lucy Stone’s impressive pumpkin pie. But this year, someone has added murder to the menu, and Lucy intends to discover who left Metinnicut Indian activist Curt Nolan deader than the proverbial Thanksgiving turkey…

Turkey Trot Murder
Besides the annual Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving Day, Lucy expects the approaching holiday to be a relatively uneventful one–until she finds beautiful Alison Franklin dead and frozen in Blueberry Pond. As a state of unrest descends on Tinker’s Cove, Lucy is in a race to beat the killer to the finish line–or she can forget about stuffing and cranberry sauce…

🍁 Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice by Katie Cicatelli-Kuc

Genre: Clean & wholesome YA

Fall is a big deal in Briar Glen, a quaint and charming village in New England. That’s when tourists from all over the country descend upon this picturesque town to see the babbling brooks and colorful leaves while sipping hot chocolate or pumpkin spice lattes.

But sixteen-year-old Lucy Kane hates the uber-popular PSL. She finds it overrated — especially when you consider the fact that there isn’t even pumpkin in it! — which is bad because she works at Cup o’ Jo, the local coffee shop her mom owns. Business at Cup o’ Jo hasn’t been great in the off-season, but that’s okay because it always picks up during the fall …

Until Java Junction, a multinational coffee chain, opens across the street and makes things harder for the small shop. And to make matters worse, it turns out Jack Harper, the new kid in school and Lucy’s secret crush, is the son of the owner. Suddenly, fall doesnt seem like it’ll be all it’s cracked up to be. Will Lucy find a way to save her mom’s coffee shop?

Why clean fall reads shine in autumn

For me, autumn is a time of looking toward the new year. I love slowing down a bit, reading a lot, and thinking of what’s happened and what’s coming. As readers, we tend to turn inward too—seeking stories that reflect comfort, redemption, and gratitude. Clean fall reads allow us to relax completely into that mood, without worrying about content that jars the spirit or disrupts the cozy calm we crave.

Whether you prefer a nostalgic classic, an inspiring contemporary novel, or a heartwarming family story, there’s something magical about clean fall reads. They remind us that gentleness, hope, and beauty still have a place in the world—and in our bookshelves.

🍂 Final Tip: Set the Scene

To fully savor your fall reading, make it an experience:

Brew a cup of spiced tea, hot cocoa, or flavored coffee.Light a candle that smells like cinnamon or pine.Wrap up in a soft blanket by a window.Let the world outside go golden while you get lost in your pages.

Because sometimes, the best kind of adventure is a quiet one—right from your favorite reading chair.

Meet author Pam Kumpe

I recently asked in a few Facebook groups for authors who’d like to be on my blog, and Pam said yes! I don’t know her, so let’s dive right in and find out more about her.

Jen – Hi, Pam, thanks for being on the blog. Tell us a little about yourself.

Pam – I began life in Hot Springs, Arkansas, with my twin sister, Mel. We lived by the railroad tracks, and she once set my Raggedy Ann doll on the tracks to see what would happen when the train came through. (That might explain a lot about my childhood. I learned to survive early on. LOL.)

Life shifted when my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer, though, and we moved to Tucson, Arizona, trading trees and lakes for cactus and sand. Dad made it and lived to be 82, and we made our home in Phoenix. It was there, during Vacation Bible School, that I first discovered Christ and His love for me in the fourth grade.

High school brought hard questions. I survived an abusive relationship during those four years, and then in college, the murder of a friend rocked me (I’d learn it was the Golden State Killer, but not until some thirty-plus years later). I also faced my own battle with cancer, living beyond the fear and surviving that season. Those heartbreaks became catalysts for my faith and my call to share the gospel through writing, as stories wrapped their way into my heart at every turn.

Pam Kumpe’s writing

Jen – I’ve seen that in my life, too, where difficult circumstances shape my faith and my writing. Tell us about what you’ve written.

writing genre

Pam – I don’t stick to one lane. I write in multiple genres: redemptive mysteries, devotionals, young reader books, and children’s stories.

Where Horses Run Secrets Hide (Book one, Emory Vaughn’s road trip to learn the truth about her father and three missing women.)

Where Jazz Plays Shadows Fall (Book Two, releasing next Spring 2026 takes Emory back to The Blue Door in New Orleans, where blueberry pancakes and jazz meet the shadows of the past and that of the first missing woman, Celeste.)

I’ve also written the Cranky the Camel children’s books, inspired by my own moments of feeling “too much” (and maybe a little cranky). I’ve written the Emma Hobbit: You Are Lost series, comprising four books, with a fifth one in the works. You can find my books on Amazon and at www.pamkumpe.com.

Pam Kumpe’s bio:

Pam Kumpe is a storyteller, speaker, and author of over 30 books, writing across genres that include redemptive mysteries, devotionals, and children’s stories.

Known as the Redeemed Storyteller, she weaves hope, faith, and a touch of humor into every page. When she’s not writing, she’s serving in street ministry, snapping photos of birds, or drinking coffee with way too much half-and-half.

She has been married to Ray for almost 42 years, and they have two sons, Marty and Brandon, as well as one grandson, Kade, and of course, Shelby, their miniature schnauzer, along with Pam’s adoptive alligator, Fred, who isn’t allowed to leave the nearby pond at the park.

Pam Kumpe – Redeemed Storyteller Painting hope on hearts, one story at a time.

Pam’s writing habits

Jen – Tell us about your writing habits.

Pam – I write early in the morning (thanks to my schnauzer, Shelby, who literally sits on my head as an alarm clock). I’m a pantser, but I always know my characters well. I love it when they surprise me with quirks I didn’t plan. Some have been known to tell me, I wouldn’t act this way or that, to keep their personality in check.

Research for Pam Kempe’s stories

Jen – I love hearing about other writers’ habits! My characters act up sometimes too. 😉 Tell us about the research you’ve done for your stories.

Pam – Yes! I love discovering secrets tucked inside places. For Where Horses Run: Secrets Hide, I traced Emory’s journey through Dallas, New Orleans, Denver, and Cody, Wyoming, spending hours exploring maps, history, and travel videos. Research makes the setting feel alive.

In my novel, Rescue at Three Sisters Springs, I set the story in Hot Springs, Arkansas —a tribute to my hometown. While conducting research, I unearthed a family secret. My mother gave up a daughter for adoption, a sister I never met (she was born two years before my birth), who died the year I learned about her. Without the research and my curiosity, I would have never known about Karen, a poet and writer who was remarkably like Lucy, the teenage girl in the novel. Research brings life to the pages and to our own walk.

Jen – What an amazing discovery! I can’t imagine how that felt. What are your goals as a writer?

Pam – I write to paint hope on hearts, no matter the reader’s age. If my words bring someone courage, joy, or a reminder that they’re not alone, then I’ve done my job.

What Pam likes to read

Jen – What do you like to read?

Pam – I adore To Kill a Mockingbird—I often write from a woman’s point of view, so it resonates deeply. I also read nonfiction and attend writing conferences to sharpen my craft (and to remember things my forgetful brain tends to overlook).

Jen – How can readers find you online?

Pam – I share about my writing and street ministry on Facebook. My website is www.pamkumpe.com, and I’ve started posting a few fun things on TikTok too.

“A homeless man once found my book Things I Learned in Jail in a dumpster. He read it, loved it, and while he never left a five-star review, he found Christ. And that’s better than any review I could ever receive.” – Pam Kumpe

Fun facts

Jen – Okay, tell us some fun facts about you!

Pam – Coffee lover (but mainly for the half-and-half).

Favorite season: fall.

Favorite verse: Jeremiah 29:11.

Hobby: photographing birds.

Fun extra fact: I named an 8-foot alligator “Fred.” I watch him. He watches me.

Shelby, my miniature schnauzer, is my bossy alarm clock and sits on my head.

Twin sister, Mel, is my best friend (and yes, we still compete for airtime).

Advice for new authors

Jen – What’s your advice for new authors?

Pam – Don’t let insecurity silence your story. Do the best you can with what you know now. Learn as you go. Improve when you can. But above all—write anyway. Your unique voice may point someone straight to Christ.

Jen – I love that! What inspired you to write?

Pam – Words were my lifeline as a child. Stories carried me to braver places than reality. They gave me courage, and they continue to do so. Now, I write because I want to use words for good and for God. I never expected to write 34 books, let alone one. God had a better plan…thankfully. Stories mirror life. And life is made for purpose and for joy and for making a difference.

Jen – Thank you, Pam, for being on the blog and sharing about your writing and your goals! It’s been great getting to know you!

Meet author, editor, & social media content creator, Shaen Layle

I met Shaen probably four or five years ago. I was just working on Birds Alive! and we were in an ACFW critique group together. (I actually had to ask her how we met because I couldn’t remember!) Recently, we reconnected when she started creating social media content for me, and I wanted her on my blog to tell about what she does.

😊Just so you know – she’s amazing!😊

Jen – Shaen, it’s so good to have you on my blog! Tell us a little about yourself.

Shaen – I write cozy mysteries for Guideposts from my home in the Midwest. I just turned in my thirteenth book to my editors last month. This spring, I also began providing novel editing and social media content creation services to authors.

💻 Social media content creation

Jen – Shaen, what is social media content creation?

Shaen – Agents and publishers prefer for an author to have an established presence on social media platforms, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. I work with authors to create custom graphics, captions, and hashtags that they can paste directly to their social media pages. I can also create book launch graphics to help authors promote a new release. All an author has to do is interact with readers in the comments.

📜 Shaen Layle’s bio:

Shaen is a USA Today Bestselling author and a Carol Award semi-finalist who writes inspirational cozy mysteries from her home in the Midwest, where she lives with her family and their shelter pup, Violet. Trained as a literary novelist and with a decade of librarianship under her belt, Shaen loves discussing all things bookish with her readers on her website and on social media.

✨ Spark Social Media

Jen – Why did you start social media content creation as a business?

Shaen – Spark Social Media was born out of a need that I saw within my own writing circle. The number one complaint that I heard authors make (myself included!) was, I don’t have enough hours in the day to get everything done. Or, I’d love it if I could just focus on writing. Some friends asked me to create some social media graphics for them, and I found out that I really enjoyed it. That’s when I started offering social media content creation services to a larger audience and haven’t looked back since!

📌 When to hire a content creator

Jen – Why should an author hire out social media marketing?

Shaen – To better focus on the main thing—writing. I talk to so many authors who are overwhelmed by the many hats they have to wear. Not only do they write, but they’re also expected to edit, post on social media, send out newsletters, grow a readership, create book launches…and the list goes on. It’s enough to make you grab another cup of coffee. By outsourcing a necessary but repetitive task like social media marketing, an author can gain back valuable time of up to 156 hours a year! (To put this into perspective, think about it this way. If you write at an average speed of 500 words per hour, you could use that recouped time to draft another book!)

Social media content creation is one piece of an author’s overall marketing efforts. ~ Shaen Layle

Jen – Does every author need a social media presence?

Shaen – Truthfully, no. It all depends on what your goals are as a creative. From my experience, social media isn’t a quick fix to sell tons of books for the average author. If you’re interested in creating a loyal tribe of readers, however, social media can help with that. Engaging regularly online will help an author create an unshakable connection with that readership base, as well as with other authors.

📢 Jen’s testimonial:

Jen – I started having Shaen do my s.m. graphics a couple of months ago. I cannot tell you how much that has helped! It’s incredibly easy – simply copy/paste, and it saves me a lot of time. Plus, she “gets” me. She understands my goals and preferences. She sticks to my brand and creates amazing graphics!

👣 The next step to work with Shaen Layle

Jen – What happens after someone fills out an interest form for Spark Social Media?

Shaen – I start by doing a discovery call or email with a potential client. We talk about who they are as a person, their branding, and their specific goals. If they decide to book my services, I create a custom social media schedule for them each week, which is delivered by email. All they have to do is paste-and-go!

🩵 Thanks!

Meet author Sofia Simpson

I’ve known Sofia Simpson for a couple of years now. We met through our Word Weavers critique group, which is online, but we also got to meet in person at the Florida Christian Writers Conference two years ago!

She’s so fun and full of life. I know y’all will enjoy getting to know her!

Jen – Welcome to the blog, Sofia! Tell us a little about yourself.

Sofia – I didn’t grow up anywhere; I grew up everywhere. My parents divorced when I was two, and my mom married a Navy guy, so we went all over the country. When their marriage fell apart six years later, my mom married two more times, but even after that, I stayed on the Eastern seaboard.

I have to say, my favorite place in the many, many places I’ve lived was Bellingham, Washington. It was not only a huge, gorgeous home with lots of places to play outside (including a creek), but it was also where I met Jesus.

In my Sunday school class, my teacher told us all about this incredible man named Jesus. After much instruction on all He did, she asked the class: Who would like their best friend to be Jesus? I raised my hand as high as it would go. Who wouldn’t want their best friend to be Jesus? I never looked back. From that point on, my heart was His. I can remember one particular time when Jesus got hold of me. I’d just stolen Lemon Heads, a sour lemon-flavored candy. I thought I had gotten away with it, but Jesus didn’t let me forget that I had just sinned against him by stealing. I felt so convicted; I went to my mom and confessed to what I did. She took me back to the store to pay for the stolen candy and apologize. I was truly sorry, to the store for stealing, to my mom for hiding my theft, and to Jesus for sinning against Him.

But, Jesus also comforted me many, many times after that when my childhood took very dark roads.

Sofia Simpson bio:

Sofia Simpson has a B.A. in Journalism that she uses to write Young Adult books. She drinks in books like she would strawberry milkshakes.

When she’s not writing, she’s imagining, and when her brain gets tired of that, she’s reading.

She lives in the middle of Florida with her handsome husband and two college sons. She also has two fur babies, a fluffy, not fat, cat and a 100-pound Doberman who likes to chase said cat.

Sofia’s books

Jen – Those are beautiful stories! I didn’t know that! Tell us about what you’ve written.

Sophia – I write Young Adult Christian Fantasy. I write what you call, romantasies, romantic fantasies. I have five books out and one novella. Four of the books are in a series, called An Elemental Series, and the novella is a spinoff in that world that I plan to make its own series. I named each of the books after an element. Terra, Torch, Tempest, and Tidal. The novella is called Operation Kane.

Here’s the series in one sentence: As one of Earth’s Guardians, one girl finds herself in a bond that might be the death of her.

I also have a standalone, my first book, called Dream Weaver. Yep, you can guess, it’s set in a world of dreams. It’s where a girl must choose who to love, her best friend and someone she’s always loved, or a man her mother has chosen for her to help her run a nightmare world.

They are all available on Amazon.

I’m currently putting finishing touches on a novel that’s much grittier than anything else I’ve worked on. I thought nightmares were hard to write about, but demons are much worse. And fighting demons in your own backyard is a reality that I don’t always like to think about. It’s also a romantasy, but features more suspense than romance. Its tagline is: A heaven-sent Guardian is sent to fight a demon-infested town. She just never expected to fight love as much as she does demons.

Writing habits

Jen – I love to ask authors about their writing habits. What are yours?

Sofia – I like to say that I have to have a seasoned and salty brain when I start writing. I cannot start writing first thing in the morning. I have to be a little tired, a lot of caffeinated and always with a warm cup of something in my hand. So, that’s usually around one in the afternoon. If I can, I’ll write straight through until five when my hubby comes home. Then, it’s time for him.

I am absolutely a plantser. Yep, that’s both. I have a skeleton outline. In my head, not written down, a basic A to Z of where I’m going, and then I’m pantsing it to my heart’s content. I’m pretty good about staying on the basic outline when it’s vague and lets me go anywhere I want. But, I will say when I hit a snag or just blank out, I have to put the story down, take a walk, go to the store, and get away from it for a while to get back on track.

But, oh, how I LOVE to be a pantser. I feel like this is the magic of writing. I’ll write something, sit back and shake my head, asking God, “How did You get me here?” And always in a delighted fashion, because, yeah, God is just so creative. I never would have figured out that storyline without His guiding hand. I feel that if I tried planning everything out, then God can’t get creative with me. I’d feel obligated to stick to MY story and not HIS.

Book 1: Terra

Elementals don’t mix. They fight over territories constantly, and news of their battles is everywhere.

Vela, an Earth Elemental, wants two things: to one day run her very own flower shop and forget about a traumatizing fire from her youth set by Fire Elementals.

When Linc, a Fire Elemental, strolls into her life, she is immediately thrown into chaos when a bond flares up, connecting them forever. Linc pursues her relentlessly, for connections like this are rare, but Vela wants nothing to do with it or him.

With this news, Vela discovers she and Linc may be a part of an age-old prophecy that could change their world forever by uniting the warring clans. However, a powerful group does not want their pairing to exist, for if it does, the prophecy may come true.

Vela and Linc must keep their bond a secret, for their lives are at risk if it is made public.

Can Vela deny a bond that could unite the battling clans, finally providing peace after centuries of conflict? Will she allow herself to love an enemy?

A heart-stopping romance and adventure, Terra is sure to delight any fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope. Become immersed in this sweet, clean fantasy romance with faith elements!

Research for Sofia Simpson’s books

Jen – I totally relate to that. Sometimes I look back and think – where did that come from? Because I sure didn’t plan it! Okay, I have another question – what about research?

Sophia – Ha ha!! Research? Okay, if the CIA or the FBI ever took a look at my search history, I feel like I’d be in trouble. I’ve researched everything from how to make poison to how to make plumbing work in an off-the-grid community. Research is important. Especially when you’re trying to write a setting of someplace you’ve never been. So, Google Earth is my friend, too.

Jen – Yep, please don’t look at my search bar! I kill people in most of my books so … 😉 I’d love to know your goals for what you write.

Sophia – My goal for writing is simple. Provide clean romantic stories for teens and anyone young at heart. It’s why I started writing. I was a librarian in a public library, and I was horrified at the books coming into the teen section. They were full of graphic sex, language, and gory violence that was celebrated. I wanted to provide stories that anyone would get lost in and maybe even curl their toes to…with just a kiss scene, nothing else. I love a good kiss in a book, but that’s all I care to read.

What Sofia reads

Jen – I think people expect clean fiction to be boring. But it’s not! What do you like to read?

Sophia – My favorite authors right now are Morgan Busse and Juliann Whicker. Busse writes Christian Fantasy, and nothing else I’ve read compares to her genuine faith that communicates so strongly in her writing. Her stories are just beautiful. I aspire to write like her every day.

Whicker is probably the most wildly creative clean romantasy writer I’ve read. Her stories take me away and keep me there, where I’ll re-read them over and over, in audio and book form.

The only non-fiction I read is my Charles Stanley devotional and Bible that I read every morning. It’s the best part of my day, to start in His Word, which sets me up for writing the rest of the day.

Find Sofia Simpson online

Jen – How can we find you online?

Sophia – I have a newsletter, where as a thank you for signing up, I give away a copy of my novella, Operation Kane. Or, you can go to www.sofiasimpson.com and wait for the pop-up to come up on the home page, and you can sign up for my newsletter there.

I’m also on Instagram and Tiktok with the handle, @sofiasimpsonauthor. You can find me on Facebook, under Sofia Simpson, Author.

Fun Facts

Jen – I love to ask authors to give us “fun facts” about themselves! What are yours?

Sophia – Fun fact? I’m planning a teen book and ball event in Central Florida. It’s called the Teen Masquerade Fantasy Ball, where every teen leaves with a “Clean” book of their choice. Four signing authors and three booksellers will be there, so there are plenty of books to choose from! It’s a dance and a book event. You read that right. Why am I doing this? Because I’m passionate about teens knowing there are plenty of “Clean” books out there, books without the graphic sex, language, and gory violence. And, I want them to discover them during a fun, safe night. My next ball is a Teen Masquerade Fantasy Ball that will be October 24th in Lakeland, FL. Mask and costume is required. Fun, right?

Jen – Super fun! Other fun facts?

Sophia – Am I a dog or cat person? Can I be both? I was always a cat lover until I met my Dobe and then I became both. I snuggle with both of them, but my Dobe puts up with it much better, so maybe I’m partial now. No, I love them both. I love squeezing my cat’s fat tummy, who my dog loves chasing around the house, too. It’s hilarious to watch them both. I never know who to root for. No, it’s always the cat. Kobe is just too much of a Goliath in that scenario.

My favorite hot drink is TeBella Apple Cinnamon tea. It’s a loose-leaf tea that is to die for. It’s so gentle, but it has a delicious flavor. No sugar required.

Sofia’s advice for new authors

Jen – What advice would you give new writers?

Sophia – My advice for new authors is based on a quote I love. When I teach writing (to fourth graders, but it applies to anyone), I love this one:

“If there’s a book you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”- Toni Morrison, winner of the Pulitzer Award and the Nobel Prize in Literature.

And the other quote I share is this: “Don’t forget- no one else sees the world like you do, so no one else can tell the stories that you have to tell.” Charles de Lint.

I’m a strong believer in that. I’ve been down so many dark roads. Both my parents were murdered, at different times, and the one Person who has gotten me through every single trauma is Jesus Christ. Allow Him to diffuse you with His strength, His creativity, His glow. Because through you, Jesus will shine. Embrace Him in every area of your life and you won’t be sorry. I’m living the life designed just for me. And I couldn’t be happier for it.

Jen – I remember you telling me about your parents. I’m with you – Jesus has gotten me through all of my trauma, difficult times, and hard questions. Where would we be without him?

Thanks so much, Sofia Simpson, for being on my blog!

Meet author David Johnson

I “met” David Johnson through a writing group on Facebook. I’m excited to have him on my blog today and learn more about him and his writing!

Let’s get started!

Jen – Hi David, it’s good to have you on the blog. Tell us about yourself.

David – I grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. It was a fast-growing town in the 70’s. As with many places, it was a prosperous time where money was easy and prices were low. Still, my family worked hard, and we had very few problems growing up. I attended church on Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday nights as well. I accepted Jesus as my Savior at the tender age of eight in Vacation Bible School. At twenty years old, I made a profound commitment to never again say “no” to opportunities to serve again. That day, everything changed, and I have had so many opportunities to serve since then.

David Johnson’s inspiration

Jen – What inspired you to start writing?

David – The short story begins with me feeling bored while sitting in a conference room, waiting for some engineers to arrive for my presentation. I had arrived early, but they were thirty minutes late. After sitting there alone for a few minutes, I opened a Word document and started writing a story. For six years, whenever I needed a distraction from life, I would open that document and add to it. Eventually, I decided to find out what it took to write a novel, realizing I was already on the right track. Then the hard work began: editing and formatting..

David Johnson’s books

Jen – That’s definitely the hard work! 🙂 What do you write?

David – I write Contemporary Christian Fiction. They are stories about everyday people with unique skills. Through extraordinary circumstances, they come to realize that they can not survive without God’s help. They survive, but they are changed in profound ways that affect those around them.

I have published a four-novel series and two stand-alone books. The last publication is a book that was inspired by the flooding in North Carolina in 2024.

Jen – I’ll be looking for that. Sounds interesting.

Writing habits & research

Jen – One thing I always ask authors is do you have a certain time of day that you write? And, are you a plotter or a pantser? (Okay, that’s two questions!)

David – I generally start with an idea or a construct for a book, and then as I begin writing, I add supporting elements, characters, and subplots as I go. I am a pantser for sure. I rarely have the ending in sight until I’m maybe three or four weeks deep in the story. I’ve always enjoyed writing late at night. I generally start after dinner and have been known to write until dawn. Of course, I do tend to sleep in on those days.

Jen – Do you have to do research for your story? If so, what did you find most interesting?

David – Yes, I do quite a bit of research for particular parts of a story. I try to stick with places and elements I have intimate knowledge about, and I have a vast number of friends and acquaintances who have professional expertise that I can call upon. However, there are things out of my experience that I research. For instance, in one book, I needed to describe in detail a fictitious Caribbean island. It was the primary setting for this particular romance adventure. I needed to know the location, distance to the nearest landfall, currents, and trade winds. Additionally, I had to research fishing charter boats, types, engines, etc. In another book, I had to research the jewelry industry, precious stones, diamond wholesalers, etc.

David’s goals

Jen – Why do you write? What goals do you have for your writing?

David – Unlike many authors, I write because I love to tell a story. I find that I need a creative outlet. I wrote computer programs for over twenty years. When I retired from that, writing became one of the ways I enjoy venting my creativity. I never started writing to make money or write to please a particular crowd. I want the reader to have an adventurous escape from the nine-to-five grind and come away with the idea that no matter how great you are, no matter how much you think that you’re in control, circumstances can show you that we all need God’s help.

More about David Johnson

Jen – I think it’s interesting to find out what authors like to read. What do you read?

David – I guess the science fiction writings of Arthur Conan Doyle, Author C. Clark, and J. R. R. Tolkien most influenced me. The logic of Sherlock Holmes and the science-backed writings of Clark resonated with me from childhood. Tolkien always impressed me with the way he could paint an entire scene with just a few words.

Jen – That’s such a skill!

Where to find David Johnson online

Jen – Where can we find you online?

David – I have a Facebook account, a Book website, and a personal blog that tracks progress and achievements in my author experience. Most of these are linked to the book website at http://www.davidandrhonda.com/book-web/index.htm.

Jen – You can also find David Johnson on his Amazon author page!

Fun facts

Jen – Tell us some fun facts – insight into David Johnson.

David – Each morning, I begin my day with a short Bible study, and I sometimes share my insights on my Facebook page. It’s remarkable how relevant a few verses can be to our lives when we focus on the context and think about how they apply to us today. When I am not writing, I paint pictures. I have original artwork that I created for many of my books. I consider myself a bit unusual because I really enjoy drinking water; I usually consume 60 ounces or more each day. Even though I live in a landlocked state, I manage to go on several SCUBA diving trips each year. I am a warm water, vacation SCUBA diver (no lakes, murky water, or wet suits required).

Jen – I tried SCUBA diving once. Enough said!

Advice for new authors

Jen – What is your advice for new authors?

David – There are a lot of good resources out there. But always keep in mind that it’s your story and tell it the way you want people to hear it. If your goal is to make money at it, then you’re likely going to be telling someone else’s story and not your own. So, decide what you want and stick with it.

Jen – That advice – it’s your story and tell it the way you want people to hear it – is so true. Thanks for sharing that and for being on the blog today!
