At the time of one of these dreams, I also had an experience with a comet. My Japanese friend who was with me said it predicted something, which then somehow happened. While I'm not sure about such things as an academic, I still find them interesting.

Additionally, I've had a lot of experiences while living abroad in different countries and traveling overland between them alone. These adventurous experiences, rather than mysteries, have allowed me to incorporate the knowledge of what it feels like to be in such venturesome situations, how it's done, and the experiences along the way into my novels.

There are also some intriguing mysteries in my family history on both sides, as our lines are quite ancient and noble, with ancestral castles. I've thought of a couple of situations inspired by these family stories that could make good novels.

Moreover, I've had moments where I felt a higher power's presence and sensed that loved ones were still with me even after they passed. These experiences have enriched my perspective and subtly influence my writing.(less)

Although it's not fictional, it's my favorite ancient civilization. I wish I could experience it firsthand. I've probably come as close as possible since living in ancient Rome, while a superpower, was similar in many ways to the societies of many developing countries today, and I've lived in a few of them. I've also been living in Rome itself and exploring the entire layout of the ancient city as well as numerous Roman archaeological sites throughout the former empire. Traditional areas of Italy can also afford glimpses into what the ancient society may have been like. Visiting museums and participating in Roman reenactment is also helpful.(less)

“Beneath his illusion of calm lies another world – one he cannot imagine, one he will never control. Those who know the game, rewrite the rules.”
Elyse DeBarre, Rise of the Magi

“As I said, they created a decoy. But they wanted most of us to live, so we’d return to tell the Lugal. They wounded me, but they didn’t wish me to die. They wanted to distract us from the true location of their scheme. And if they saw me reach the Euphrates, then that wasn’t the actual location for their plans. Why did they do this? To create fear, and confusion. How do I know? Since I do this myself.”

Elyse DeBarre One of the many sources I used for my research, both for historical details and Roman era daily life information is this one. "The Oxyrhynchus Papyri" edited by Bernard P. Grenfell and Arthur S. Hunt. From "Notes on Papyri from Early Roman Alexandria." This collection includes translations and notes on various papyri from ancient Alexandria, including legal and historical documents.
