The plot is fairly straightforward in usual romantasy molding, in it we have a character being drawn into a greater machination while also crossing paths with another sexy character they just can’t help but want to jump some bones. In this case, Annabelle (Annie for short) is a worshiper of Eriks, the God of Love, and she finds herself cast out for reasons, only to cross paths with Davian, a worshiper of the God of Pain. And Davian, not only being a sexy man with mystery behind a mask, is trying to uncover the truth about his wife’s murder. Cue tension and bones hopping.

I want to start with this world Sandpiper has created, it’s awesome. As someone who studied classical antiquity in college, anytime a book uses that as inspiration, I’m immediately in. I’m a simple man, give me meddling gods and I’ll read it. I really liked that there is a pantheon of gods here, but they are not Ancient Greek, but their own. Sure we have a God of Love, one of War, one of Wisdom, but we also have one of Pain, of the Forge, and Moon. Yes, the inspirations are clearly drawn from the Greek Pantheon, but they are their own here and I really liked where Sandpiper took them, their personalities and the traits of their worshipers, too. I also really liked the cultish nature of these gods and their houses. You’ll have to read the book, but the House of Love is a cult, and not exactly a nice one (re: grooming), but when part of a cult, people tend to not see the forest for the trees, and Sandpiper does an excellent job making Annie not realizing many aspects until she finally leaves Eriks’ side. There is a very dark undertone at play here and if you don’t have a deeper appreciation for the inspiration source, it might come across as ‘gross’ or ‘icky’, and that is a fair criticism, but if you do understand the inspiration, you’ll be far more engrossed in the story and worldbuilding. Could it have been more clear of these vibes using a modern lens, sure, but I really liked how Sandpiper played with the inspiration here, and left the darkness to linger.

Which brings me to Annie, our POV. This story is told exclusively via Annie’s 1st POV and that was a smart move. Because of how this world operates, having Annie be blind (almost self-imposed) to what her beliefs truly are, it allows for some excellent character growth. Annie is a people pleaser by nature and by her training (again, re: grooming), so from a young age, she is taught to please others, mostly in a sexual nature (God of Love…) but she also has a kindness streak in her that makes for some great scenes. It makes her a very compelling protagonist because while Annie sees this as her devotion to Eriks, the layers are peeled back and we, as well as her growth, sees how wrong this is on different levels. I think this really allowed Sandpiper to give some commentary on a number of topics without it ever becoming preachy. And while Annie is very naive at times (I rolled my eyes at a few scenes), she is flawed in a way that makes her relatable, especially as she starts learning truths after she meets Davian.

Ah Davian, who doesn’t like a broody shadow daddy with loads of trauma, physical and mental??? The less I say about Davian, the better it’ll be for when you read, but let’s just say, I think he was a great foil and love interest for Annie.

Outside of Annie and Davian, there are a handful of characters we get to know on a greater level. Camriel and Granville I’ll leave for the story, but Fella I think stole the show for me, even though she isn’t a major major character. I really liked her and how she was able to get Annie to see the light so to speak. There is an extended festival scene where Fella is integral in Annie’s arc and I thought it was exceptional. Then there are two cats, Whip and Carnage, they were the best. In fact, could use some more of these two felines in promotional art, just saying.

This is the third Sandpiper book I’ve read (plus a short story), so going in, I knew the prose and pacing would be excellent. That didn’t disappoint here. Sandpiper really has a gift when it comes to making you disappear into the protag’s head, her voice envelops you and you just become Annie. It is intimate 1st POV and the flow is superb, easy to dive into, and when you finally finish, you realize you lost track of time. A gifted storyteller, Sandpiper.

There are two things I do need to touch on, and these are completely personal feelings on why TFF wasn’t a perfect read for me. And that comes down to worldbuilding and Davian’s motivations. I’ve said it before and it still rings true, I’m more of a fantasy romance fan over true romantasy. This story fully fits into the romantasy mold, meaning that the romance takes precedence over the fantasy plot. While the romance was awesome and naturally grew and had some excellent roadblocks, the murder mystery plot (which stems from the worldbuilding of the gods) was put on the backburner a few times to progress the romance forward. I like my plot and romance to be on equal footing, working in tandem with each other as I don’t want to lose momentum of a plot for some lovey action. While the murderer was finally revealed and was great, some of the aftermath became a bit more telling than showing for me.

And Davian had a part to play in this. While his motivations become clear after some time, the romance feels slightly fast when it starts off that the murder of his wife is the inciting incident. I won’t spoil anything here, it all works out and makes complete sense, but that suspension of belief took a bit for me to get behind, aka getting lost with the plot for the romance angle. I think part of this stems from the fact we don’t see the actions of the House of Pain like we do with the House of Love. I get it, we only have Annie as the POV, and we do get the aforementioned festival, but we don’t really get a deeper dive into the actions of the worshipers of the God of Pain, even though Annie stays at their house for parts of this story.

Again, both of these are totally personal preferences here, as I know neither will stave off readers who enjoy romantasy.

There is a reason why R.A. Sandpiper has gone from little ol’ indie author to indie darling to Big 5 Trad author, she just knows how to tell a damn good story. The Fallen Faithful is her first true romantasy and knowing her skill, drive, and imaginative brain, the sky is the limit for her and I, for one, cannot wait to see what she concocts next!
