Hey authors, ever read something and felt... "Man... this author is my tribe!"?

That's how I felt reading this memoir (and I don't even read memoirs).

I learned of Murakami when I was at the Kingsmead Book Fair the previous weekend. I got to chatting Hey authors, ever read something and felt... "Man... this author is my tribe!"?

That's how I felt reading this memoir (and I don't even read memoirs).

I learned of Murakami when I was at the Kingsmead Book Fair the previous weekend. I got to chatting with the EB bookseller, who is also an aspiring author, and he dived straight into Murakami. I'd never heard of Murakami, but as he spoke, something told me to pay attention because I know by now the feeling that comes over me when the universe is directing my destiny.

Later, I Googled Murakami and learned that his genre is Magical Realism - just like me - and that confirmed my sense of destiny at play!

In his book, Novelist As A Vocation, he says a great many things that resonated with me so hard, that many times I was saying, 'Same!' out loud...
But the one quote hit the hardest:
"What has been (and continues to be) most important for me is my direct, physical awareness that some special power has *given me the chance* to write novels."
Same, Murakami! SAME!

What keeps a novelist in the game for the long haul?
Mental fortitude, resilience, staying power and discipline. These things will keep you writing and see you through criticism, disappointment, failure, insecurity, and lack of confidence.

His start and end is 'how does writing make you feel?' And if it doesn't make you feel good, it's not for you. To me, writing is SO hedonic. It's physically pleasurable to be typing away at my laptop, creating works of fantasy. Like effervescent joy in my brain.

To take a page or three out of his memoir, I'm going to be focusing a lot more on:
- writing for myself, knowing my tribe will eventually find me. Because not everyone will like your work, but you need to
- striving to be less self-conscious and taking more leaps of faith in myself and diving deeper into my own creativity
- stopping when it feels like work instead of freedom and pleasure
- focusing on the writing and withdrawing from everything that takes me away from it (except my daughter)
