💀 EXCERPT 💀Dulcettones from bow and string created grace as music soared to the vaulted ceilingand images of horror panned across the wall. Blood and rose petals littered thechampagne-colored carpet. Candles reduced to hardened puddles on occasional tables, their frozen drips streaked toward the floor. Every detail designed to draw theviewer’s gaze to the dead woman spread eagle in the center of the room, herhands and feet staked with metal tent posts. Her eyelids removed and her torsocarved, she’d been butchered and displayed in the most gruesome definition ofthe word. One image transitioned into another, a macabre carousel.
Close-upsof the damage to the body gave way to distance shots of the room, taken fromseparate angles. As detailed and distressing as it was, it couldn’t recreatethe smell of death. Feces, urine, blood, and the sickly, sweet scent of rosesmixed with the sandalwood from the scented candles and permeated the room. Thefaint odor of the initial officer's vomit wafted in from beyond the open door.He could show them, but they’d never know. The last photo, the room after thebody was removed, filled the screen as the music faded to silence.
“Lightson.” Special Supervisory Agent Noah Danes catalogued the expressions of thethirty bureau cadets in the lecture hall. He punched back to the first photo. The full image of the room with the corpse showcased dead center. “This is howReston police found the body of Caitlyn Jones. They were responding to a noisecomplaint. The music we just heard, Adagio in G Minor, composed by TomasoAlbinoni, played on the stereo system at full volume. We asked them to securethe residence, and advised them to touch nothing, not even the stereo, until wearrived to document the scene. You’re seeing it as I did. What do you see?”
“Thesecond victim of the Beltway Romeo,” a voice sounded from the back.
Noahnodded. “That’s the name the press has given him, not law enforcement. The bodyof the first victim, Stephanie Jackson, was found in her Frederick, Marylandhome. Because they have, annually, more than four times the violent crime ofReston, they were prepared to handle the scene there. Reston PD knew they wereout of their depth and were familiar enough with the details of the Jacksonmurder to request immediate help to process the scene. Since then, theBehavioral Analysis Unit here at Quantico has acted as a judicial clearinghousein this investigation. Who can explain what I mean, and extra points if you cantell me how we navigated the multi-jurisdictional morass?” Hands shot up.“Sciarrillo.”
“Oneway to elude law enforcement is to change jurisdictions.” Sciarrillo was aformer military officer. What was euphemistically referred to as a door kickerbut he was smart and had excellent instincts. The BAU would bore him, but he’dprove a formidable field agent. “Even in our digital age, communicationsbetween local law enforcement in different counties, and differing states, leave a lot to be desired. The Behavioral Analysis Unit both collects anddisseminates information to various law enforcement agencies. It’s kind ofbrilliant. As soon as Romeo crossed state lines, the FBI claimed jurisdictionover all his crimes.”
“Good.Hicks?”
Theyoung woman lowered her hand. She, like so many younger recruits, held a lawdegree. Extraordinarily intelligent, overachiever, destined for a career ingovernment, politics, or maybe a judicial seat. She’d rise through the ranks inwhite collar crime. “Doesn’t Romeo present as too intelligent to make themistake of earning the FBI’s attention?”
“Yes.However, let’s remember. By spreading his kills out, he makes them harder tolink. It was a calculated risk.” Though true, he didn’t believe it himself. There was something more to this pattern. Speaking of. “There are eight victimsto date. Each woman was single, successful, and upwardly mobile. They heldpowerful jobs in the capital and lived in communities accessible by the Beltwayor the northeast corridor. As fresh evidence is discovered, we refine ourconclusions and ViCAP is updated. For those of you who may not know, althoughby now you should, ViCAP stands for the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. It enables local law enforcement agencies to collect, enter, and analyze theirown violent crime information. It facilitates the identification of similarcases on a regional, state, and national basis. As in all things, it’s only asgood as the information added to it.” He nodded and clicked on another photo.“What else do you see?”
“Hetortures them. Removes their eyelids and forces them to watch what he’s doingto them until they die.”

💀 Philly Heat Series #4 💀
It’s exquisite torture watching you. For your sake, I hope you meet my expectations... Public Defender Hannah Patel is being stalked by a man obsessed. Detective Doyle Murphy hopes to redeem himself by protecting Hannah, but neither expect their forced closeness to create genuine feelings. Their burgeoning romance pushes her stalker over the edge. Into murder.
Will love or madness win?
💀 EXCERPT 💀
TheJanuary air was sharp as shattered glass in Hannah’s lungs. The scull slicedthrough the water soundlessly; the oars cut through with precision as shepumped and pushed her legs and arms in a familiar rhythm. Embraced the burn inher muscles. It was early; the sun hadn’t fully breached the horizon, but herswas not the only boat on the river. A college crew sped past, their coxswainnodding to her as they passed. She was on the last leg, approaching theclubhouse at the far end of Boathouse Row, when she pulled in her oars and letthe momentum take her home as the sun glowed orange over the skyline of CenterCity.
Ineeded this. The solitude and quiet. The solace I always find on the water. Ineed the calm to carry me through the day.
Shelifted the bow side oar and glided alongside the stage before climbing out withpracticed grace. She stood and stretched, pulled off her cap and wiped thelight sheen of sweat from her brow. Hannah rowed all year, conditions allowing, and though sometimes the river froze, winter was her favorite. In the dog daysof summer, the algae and pollen created a pungent film on the water’s surface, which hindered the oars. Cold meant clean. “This is perfect.”
Pullingher single scull from the river was the hardest part, and she did iteffortlessly. She’d rowed since college and had deceptively muscular legs andarms. With the oars in one hand and the boat over her shoulder, she carried hergear to the clubhouse and secured it in the garage. It had been converted intoa storage area for boats and gear decades prior, but was still called thegarage.
Twentyminutes later, dressed in her favorite charcoal pencil skirt and a silky blousethe color of ripe peaches, her long black hair–still damp from theshower–plaited down her back, Hannah pulled a thick wool cap over her ears andslipped into the cashmere coat her parents gave her for Christmas. She hurriedacross Kelly Drive and onto Lemon Hill Drive, where she’d parked her car ninetyminutes earlier.
Hermother hated the Mazda. Thought she should drive something small, sporty, andfeminine. Hannah considered it, and, despite her secret infatuation with thePorsche Carrera, chose the sport utility vehicle. Sculling, skiing, and hervolunteer work at the Women’s Humane Society Animal Shelter in Olde City madethe compact SUV the better choice. Frosty morning sunlight glinted off thechrome detailing. Hannah smiled. And she’s pretty.
Withthe fob in her hand, she remotely started the car, used her foot to open theliftgate and tossed her duffel bag in the back. She’d had it customized fortransporting animals and no matter how funky her gear got, or muddy, or sandy, she wouldn’t damage her interior. She shivered, closed the hatch, and unlockedthe doors. With one foot in the car, and her body half in the seat, she froze.
Astandard piece of paper, folded in half and tucked under the windshield wiper, fluttered in the icy breeze. Dread curled in her stomach. The coppery taste offear coated her tongue. She reached for it, slowly, cautiously, as though itwould bite her if she moved too quickly, and picked it off her windshield. Shechecked the back seat. Empty. Checked it again. Hopped into the driver’s seat, and locked the door. She waited a second, two, before unfolding the sheet.
It’sexquisite torture watching you. Wondering how those powerful legs will feelwrapped
aroundme. How the muscles in your arms will quiver under restraints. I’ll know soon.
Foryour sake, I hope you meet my expectations.

Getting out of one’scomfort zone is important for personal growth. It can be mentally exhausting, but the rewards outweigh the downside.
This could mean anythingfrom going for a solo trip, to taking an unfamiliar route, to taking anunfamiliar job. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed when you’re in an unfamiliarterritory. The key is to focus on why you are doing it and remind yourself thatthis is part of life’s normal process. The best way to overcome initialhesitation is to participate in activities that you find interesting andmeaningful.
Start small, build yourconfidence and work your way up to the scary stuff. From there, you’ll feelmotivated to make more daring decisions. For example, if you have a fear ofpublic speaking, start by giving short speeches to your friends and family, then move onto bigger audiences. If you’re afraid of heights, take hikes inmountains, then move onto skydiving or rock-climbing!
Getting out of yourcomfort zone will also make you feel more confident. It will help you realizethat you possess unique talents you never knew about and create mindset shifts. When you get out of your comfort zone and succeed, you’re sure to be amazed athow capable and powerful you can be.

A Day In The Life Of A Single Mom
https://unsplash.com/@shnautsherEvery morning, the single mom wakes up early to get her children ready for school and herself ready for work. For the single mom, it is a race against the clock. She hustles to get dressed for work, pack lunches for the kids, and make sure her children are on the bus on time.Once the kids are on the bus, she quickly tidies the house and gets breakfast for her and her children before she leaves for work.
