Carl Frederick was a devotee of est, Erhard Seminars Training. He wrote a book about the practice while working to become a Seminar Leader for the est training. The book became a best-seller, and Frederick quit his job to travel, first to Hawaii, and then around the world in a sailboat. He eventually settled in Costa Rica, where he constructed and managed a tourist resort in 1997.
Frederick received his B.Sc. in Psychology from Penn State University and his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. Before joining est, he worked in advertising and marketing, first for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a product manager, then for Heublein in Hartford, Connecticut, as Director of New Products.
