Thanks for you question. I'm delighted you're reading the book and that you're experiencing every emotion I had while I wrote. I'm sorry to say that the scene with Olivia Sautine really did happen. It was quite a bit worse in real life, I'm afraid. It was horrible to write and I imagine it is grueling to read. But I included it because I wanted my readers to understand exactly what Nancy was facing and what the stakes for France were if she failed. There are a handful of really difficult scenes in the book but I didn't make any of them up. Nancy lived through them all and I think having them in the book helps us understand her better.

I hope you end up loving Nancy the way that I do!

Warmly,
Ariel(less)

Art Is The Gift

I’m not much of a painter. In my thirty-four years of life I’ve only created one decent watercolor. And that was on accident in the third grade. But as the daughter of a prolific artist I have a deep respect for those who can create beauty with a brush, a bit of paint, and a canvas. I admire the way they dream things into being.

Sometimes I wonder if we place more importance on the being than the d

“We are in the twilight years of a long love affair, and it has recently occurred to me that a day will come when one of us buries the other. But, I remind myself, that is the happy ending to a story like ours. It is a vow made and kept. Till death do us part. It is the only acceptable outcome to a long and happy marriage, and I am determined not to fear that day, whenever it arrives. I am equally determined to soak up all the days between.”
Ariel Lawhon, The Frozen River

“This is what it means to age, I think. The days are long, but the years are short.”
Ariel Lawhon, The Frozen River

“Memory is a wicked thing that warps and twists. But paper and ink receive the truth without emotion, and they read it back without partiality. That, I believe, is why so few women are taught to read and write. God only knows what they would do with the power of pen and ink at their disposal.”
