In elementary school, for example, I loved diagramming sentences and figuring out how to put words together to achieve different results. So it never occurred to me until I was in 5th-6th grade that not everyone could write as easily as I could. It was my gift. As a lowly 8th grader, I entered a school writing contest open to all students in grades 8 through 12--and won!

In college, I majored in English and was going to be a great journalist. After writing prolifically all through college, I turned down a job as a writer for a weekly newspaper in favor of becoming an advertising copywriter. The pay was much better. Yeah, I know: the road not traveled. But I became a darn good copywriter, then marketing/PR manager, then executive VP, and so on. I decided to put off writing my first book until I knew a little bit more about life--and then life just happened. SO, the best thing about being a writer is that you are never too old to write. Today I will make all of my decisions    with the mind of the highest within me.

I say the above words to myself every morning before I start my day. Why? Because they keep me mindful that I will, in fact, be making endless decisions, or CHOICES, all throughout my day until I finally close my eyes again that night. Most will be mundane choices—but any one of them, at any time, could end up affecting my home, my safety, even my life. Let me give you a simplified example. I ch Read more of this blog post »

“She Looked down to see her ankle bound once more by the iron chain. "I left that chain behind in the courtyard. Who put it back on me?"

"You did. When you thought again about how many people hurt you and how much you wanted to hurt them back. You bound yourself to them once more even now in your death. It's just as I told you when we were in the palace together. When you condemn your enemies, you also condemn yourself. The only way out for you is forgiveness. If you don't forgive your enemies now, they will drag you off the Chinawad Bridge into the depths of hell. And they will keep you there until you choose to let them go.”
Mary Funk, Remember Me: A Love Story

“Zabi and I know each other like the wind knows the sky, each one separate, yet always together, two halves of a whole.”
Mary Funk, Remember Me: A Love Story

“Your beloved is still with you even now, my child. He goes wherever you go. You carry him with you always. And when you fear you cannot hold onto him any longer, he carries you.”
Mary Funk, Remember Me: A Love Story
