Hi April,
Please forgive my slow reply--I didn't see your question until now! Picking a favorite character is a bit like picking a favorite child: impossible. I love some of my characters because they were easy to work with. They showed up every day and revealed who they were. Others I love because they've challenged me in new ways or taught me or surprised me. A lot of them did all of the above. I will say that Nadia did all of the above and more. My favorite characters from other books? I have many. But at the top of the list are Cal from Middlesex, Olive Kitteridge, Owen Meany, Liesel (and Rudy) from The Book Thief, Adah from The Poisonwood Bible, Alma from The Signature of All Things, Ruby from Cold Mountain. From childhood: Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables and Karana from Island of the Blue Dolphins. Thanks for your questions!(less)

I'll be on the Road and All the Winters After will be on the March Indie Next List!

As of yesterday, All the Winters After is now officially out of the nest, flapping its pages. I woke up to a really lovely review from the New York Journal of Books, which called it, "A winner read that should appeal to a variety of literary and genre tastes." And these lines revved up my heart even before my first cup of coffee: "All novelists strive for what all readers want: that moment whe Read more of this blog post »

“I know now that the most genuine happiness is kept afloat by an underlying sorrow.”
Seré Prince Halverson, The Underside of Joy

“During those times, only under piles of blankets did she feel substantial enough not to drift away; they kept her weighted down and a part of the world. But eventually her dog's persistence and her own strong will would win over, and she'd drag herself up from the thick bog and go back to her chores and her books, carving the missing days into the wall so they did not escape entirely.”
Seré Prince Halverson, All the Winters After

“We all break the surface into this life already howling the cries of our ancestors, bearing their DNA, their eye colors and their scars, their glory and their shame. It is theirs; it is ours. It is the underside of joy.”
Seré Prince Halverson, The Underside of Joy
