I know we say this every year, but it really was hard to choose a winner as we loved all our shortlisted entries and could see merit and talent in each and every one, which led to some quite spirited discussion! Our judges, Laura Longrigg from MBA Literary Agents and Headline’s Director of Publishing Marion Donaldson, eventually picked a winner and we can’t wait to meet the author when she joins us for her exclusive mentoring session. Our flash fiction prize winner was equally hard to call – all three of the shortlisted stories are superbly plotted and all have a twist to the tale. But in the end our judges decided that one story stayed with them long after they’d finished reading, and they felt this should be the winning entry. Intense, emotional and memorable, it makes you want to climb into the story and shout ‘Don’t go’! But we won’t spoil things for you as we have published it on our website and you can read it here. With one week to go we just wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s entered the Harry Bowling Prize for New Writing. We’ve really enjoyed hearing from everyone, either by email or by twitter, and we’re looking forward to reading all the entries we’ve received.

We’re also very excited to share the exciting news that our 2012 winner has just signed a two-book deal with Quercus. Writing as Natalie Meg Evans, her novel The Dress Thief will be published in July 2014. Huge congratulations to Natalie on her well-deserved success. Natalie is one of our many winners who has gone on to secure a publishing deal after winning the Harry Bowling Prize, and we’re thrilled to be part of her successful writing career.

Natalie wrote an inspiring piece about her experience of winning the Harry Bowling Prize, which was first published in Woman’s Weekly Fiction Special:

“I will always remember the November morning when I learned I was long-listed for the Harry Bowling prize. I was in a cottage in Wales with a dog for company, working on a novel when up popped the email. I was delighted and slightly overwhelmed. I’d sent in my entry and put it from my mind, thinking – as we self-analytical souls always do – ‘I won’t win.’

The Harry Bowling prize was one I’d always kept my eye on. I’d entered some years before, but not made the cut. It seemed to me like a prize that opened doors. I knew of writers who’d won and gone on to publishing success.

I entered with a manuscript I’d finished some years earlier, which was quietly sleeping. My novel fitted the bill, I thought, a historical romance set in Paris. I got the niggle I’ve learned to trust that says, ‘Give it a go’. I reckoned I was due a change of fortune. I’d lost my job the previous summer. I was now working as a cleaner, buffing up holiday chalets and making beds, which brought in enough to feed the animals and put diesel in the car. When, my mobile rang one morning in January 2012, I was wielding a mop. On a clear line from London, I learned I was on the Harry Bowling shortlist. Thing is, my mobile phone never rings in my corner of East Anglia. There’s never any signal, except that day. I do like magic!

Talking of which, magic unrolls for writers once they commit to finishing manuscripts, honing skills, getting their work ‘out there.’ Oh, and entering competitions. Following the ceremony in London when my name and face came up on the screen as the Harry Bowling winner, 2012, I learned I’d been shortlisted for a Romance Writers’ of America Golden Heart© award for the novel I’d been finishing in Wales. I flew to California in the heat of July. I didn’t win that one, but I made contacts and friends and walked tall because in the USA, if you’re on a list they tell you you’re ‘awesome.’ Of course, you come home to sulking dogs and a pile of washing, but four days of ‘awesome’ does you good.

I’m delighted to say that Laura Longrigg of MBA (who administers the Harry Bowling prize) is now my agent. Under her hawk-like direction, I’m honing my novel and, fingers crossed, it will find a publisher. To be at the Romantic Novelists Association Awards in London with my husband, quaffing champagne, receiving a gift of books and a cheque (much needed, I was still a cleaner) and the applause of fellow writers, was the moment the world changed.
