Born in Adelaide, with German-Italian heritage, Kyra Geddes spent her infancy on the South Australian opal fields before moving to Sydney. Following a successful career in marketing, Kyra returned to university to study English and pursue her life-long dream of writing, earning the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence. THE STORY THIEF is her debut novel and the culmination of almost a decade of research and writing. When not at her desk, Kyra can often be found visiting one of Sydney's many art galleries or daydreaming about future travel with her husband and two children. ...more

More recently, I have thrown myself into discovering some of the wonderful new releases in contemporary and historical fiction from Australian authors, including debut authors like myself. I love books that sit in the sweet spot between literary and commercial, and I especially love art-inspired novels.(less)

It was always easier to keep researching, planning, put on a load of washing or make yet another cup of tea. I was convinced there had to be a perfect way of starting the book, the chapter, the scene … if only I could find it. I was like our old Italian greyhound who used to go round and round in ever-diminishing circles before he’d finally pick a spot to lie down. Eventually I learned to tell myself there was no single right way; that they were all simply words on a page and I could change them at any time. Perfectionism is the enemy of any first draft.(less)

Limberlost by Robbie Arnott
"WOW. Just finished reading Limberlost. Read the last page with both a sense of tightness and openness in my chest. I have no words. Robbie used all the good ones.

I will now seek out his backlist. "

The Story Thief by Kyra Geddes
"This was a fantastic read, I had trouble putting it down, (hard copy of course) the best book I have read to date. Although the story is fiction, it was a great history lesson."

The Story Thief by Kyra Geddes
“Sharing the lessons that it had taken me a lifetime to learn, I would tell her that everyone has a right to tell a story, any story – that in the telling, or the retelling, the story becomes our own.”

The Story Thief by Kyra Geddes
“If I timed it just right and if the clouds kept their distance that day, the sunlight would hit the chapel’s stained-glass windows and cast a rainbow at my feet. Squinting and tilting my head to one side, then the other, it
was easy to imagine myself disappearing into that rainbow.”

The idea for THE STORY THIEF came in 2014 during my university studies in English and Creative Writing, when I first read Henry Lawson's story, 'The Drover's Wife', and some of its best known retellings. It bothered me that Lawson chose to leave the See Full Answer

“Epigraph: ‘No Australian who has wrestled with the ardours and subtleties of resolving this continent in terms of literature will discount Henry Lawson.’ Miles Franklin, 1942.”
Kyra Geddes, The Story Thief

“I simply could not understand why so many people refused to read Australian books or cringed at the mention of familiar settings and events. Why were they so convinced life was superior elsewhere? Why shouldn’t Australia presume to possess her own culture, instead of just a favourable climate?”

“That’s a good lesson for you right there, Lillian. Don’t
ever let a man tell you what to do, not even your own husband.”

“Epigraph: ‘Women have a different history. Someone ought to write it down. We’re not sheep or shadows, or silly saints the way Mr Lawson would have. There is more to us. More to me than any of them have written,
if it comes to that.’ Barbara Jefferis, 'The Drover's Wife' (1980)”

“Though small in scale, I now saw that this canvas was large enough to hold my own grief.”
