How To Amuse Yourself When You’re A Writer…




So…I was brainstorming scenes for my newest Timewalker novel, WHITE FIRE. The hero is an Immortal King who’s been missing for a few centuries. To say he’s uptight and a real killjoy is an understatement. Of course, he’s also sexy and honorable and an all around hunk. The heroine is an earth girl, a Timewalker who grew up on another planet to hide her from some really creepy bad guys. She’s flippant, and fearless, and likes to argue with him because no one else will. I really needed to make a list of possible scenes, but my muse refused to cooperate. To work around that I wrote “Crazy Ass Things That Could Happen In White Fire” at the top of the page on a yellow legal pad, got out my purple pen, and waited.




Please bear in mind that it was after midnight, I was tired and feeling a bit punchy. Some of these ideas were pseudo-serious. Most were not. I have laughed out loud at this list several times since, but it got my muse flowing. I hope you enjoy this bizarre glimpse into the twisted musings of an author.




Crazy Ass Things That Could Happen In White Fire:



1 – The king decides he’d be happier as a girl, dresses in drag, and moves to Vegas.


2 – The king becomes mortal.


3 – The Gates open and everyone on Earth dies. They all just die. (Showing a little frustration on that one.)


4 – The king gets a pedicure.


5 – Pink bunny slippers.


6 – Foot massage, bubble bath, and chimes.


7 – Chocolate glazed donuts.


8 – They plant a tree.


9 – They read Eat Pray Love aloud to one another while in ‘downward dog’ yoga position.


10 – They turn into fairies.


11 – They eat a Tootsie Pop and count the licks.


12 – They get drunk and dye their hair blue.


13 – They time travel to the past so they can disco dance with the Village People.


14 – Ride an elephant.


15 – Ride the Teacups ride at Six Flags until they puke.


16 – They watch Twilight, the movie.


17 – They sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow and count flying monkeys.


18 – They go rock climbing.


19 – They stare into each other’s eyes and chant like monks.


20 – They go Bonnie & Clyde and go blow stuff up.




Serious? No. But it did help me start moving forward again, and it made me laugh. And, a couple of them even made it into the book. So, if you’re ever stuck for ideas about anything, whether it’s writing a story or what to do on a Saturday night, just make a “Crazy Ass” list of your own. Have fun, and good luck!

Well, maybe it’s because I’m a girl (and, if you believe the cliches, we change our minds a lot), or maybe it’s because I had too much chocolate followed by an ice cream chaser.  Whatever the reason, I asked the wonderful Jennifer at RomCon to make new covers for me – Again.   I’ve got Blue Abyss (book 3) , Black Gate (book 4), and a novella coming out in about a month, so I guess I better make up my mind. : )

What if…?


That is my favorite question.

I couldn’t help myself. I laughed out loud and watched this again. Total nerdy bliss for me. Vader’s dancing? Too funny. Two of my favorite things in life – Star Wars and Cello music. Thanks, Piano Guys! Enjoy!

I wish this were science fiction, but it’s not. The BBC ran an article recently on Russian President Putin’s public go-ahead for use and further development of weapons meant to alter your mind.


Psychotronic weapons, they’re being called. And according to the article, they’ve been in development in both the USA and Russia since the 1950′s. They use electromagnetic waves, shot straight at your brain, to change your psychological state, fry your brain, leave you comatose, or, I’m sure, kill you…depending on their goal.


To quote the Russian defense minister, Mr. Serdyukov, who made the announcement: “The development of weaponry based on new physics principles – direct-energy weapons, geophysical weapons, wave-energy weapons, genetic weapons, psychotronic weapons, and so on – is part of the state arms procurement program for 2011-2020.”


So, I don’t know about anyone else out there, but this is just creepy. Imagine someone able to sit across a room and fry your brain, make you lose your mind, or subtly manipulate you into committing a crime, like murder. According to this article, it’s actually possible for these weapons to, “…transmit suggestions and commands directly into someone’s thought processes.”


And here I used to think nuclear weaponry was bad news.


Being cursed with this knowledge, my thoughts go back to Jason Russell’s very public meltdown just days after the release of the Kony 2012 video. If you read the reports, this husband and father stripped in public, ran around naked, masturbating and incoherent in the street. His family said he had an emotional breakdown brought on my dehydration and too much stress. Yeah…right. That’s just what I do when I get thirsty and stressed out. No drugs in his system either and the police decided not to press charges.


Is it just me, or does this incident shine in a whole new light this morning? It definitely makes me ask the big, WHAT IF, question. And to think, my new book, Silver Storm, features an attack by a geomagnetic/dark matter weapon. Hmmm. And here I thought I was writing science FICTION. Now we can only cross our fingers and pray for sanity to be restored. Where does this end?


Look, I’m no world leader or elite scientist, but doesn’t anyone out there have the common sense to say, “NO?” Hey, Mr. President. Yes, you too, Mr. Secretary of Defense and all of you bickering Politicians. Oh, yes, and YOU scientists who are actually working on this stuff. Hey, superspy, black-ops hero, GOOD GUY…yeah, you – the people who know and are in a position to help the rest of humanity – please stop this insanity. Zombie movies are a blast to watch, but I’d prefer not to become one. I’m sure the rest of humanity would really appreciate someone honorable to run interference for us as well.

Anyone remember the scene where James T. Kirk and Sulu dive onto the top of the Romulan’s planetary drill from their space shuttle as Captain Pike is on his way over to talk to the bad guys? (New Star Trek movie, not the old ones – although I love all of them, too.)


I though it looked completely insane and like something so far beyond our current tech I woudln’t see it in this lifetime.


Not only is it in this lifetime, it already happened. Wow. I don’t even know what to say. This guy jumped from 71,500 feet and was in free fall for eight minutes. He’s planning an even higher jump soon.
