I've been a free-lance writer for over forty years but my output to-date hasn't been widely read. It's mainly been user guides and help text for IT software, articles for business-to-business magazines and website content (including blogs). All pretty boring but the magazine articles at least gave me the opportunity to interview some interesting people, including a few celebrity chefs.

I've long wanted to write a novel but, with a mortgage to pay and a family to support, I needed a more dependable income. Now I'm semi-retired and the mortgage is paid off, I've been able to fulfil my ambition. The result is my first novel, "The Itch That Couldn't Be Scratched", which was published on 1st March 2024.

It's a tale of obsession and it's effect on

Our actions may be made with good intentions but they don't always have good outcomes further down the line. So we never know what's going to happen.(less)

I've seen a couple of TV series featuring DCI Karen Pirie and have enjoyed them. However, this book is something of a disappointment.
Pirie heads a Historical Cases Unit and the book concerns the investigation into the case of a missing girl, prompted

Another cracking Dick Francis tale.
If I have a slight criticism, it's that all his main characters are very similar. Male, aged under forty, very intelligent and rational, extremely innovative and attractive to women. They also have a way of understa

I've read a few Ann Cleeves' books, from the Shetland and Vera series, and I've found them an enjoyable read. They do tend to be a little on the slow side but I've always assumed that's intentional, given that they're based in rural or semi-rural loc ...more

This is not, I think, one of John Grisham's best books. In fact, it gets quite tedious at times, which is unusual for this author. It's also not his usual legal thriller, although the main character is a lawyer.
The book features Joel Backman, a high
