Furry books—at least, the ones I've read—tend to fall into the sci-fi, fantasy, or slice-of-life genres, so to have a gritty tale like this one in the furry "canon" is a welcome change of pace. I was fully engaged from cover to cover, and I expect others will be as well.

The story follows Elijah, a young and talented homicide detective, as he tries unravel the mystery of why a small-town bar features a full skeleton as a decoration. Curiosity quickly turns to obsession, setting on Elijah on a path of destruction that threatens to consume him and those around him. Interestingly, the central conflict of the novel is less of a whodunnit than Elijah's personal struggles, both internal and external, and in that regard it succeeds in captivating the reader as the case takes ever darker twists and turns.

Aside from some sluggishness in the opening chapter or two, the fast pacing is consistent and the writing is strong throughout. I also appreciated the attention to detail with respect to the true-crime elements—it's clear the author has done a fair bit of research, and as a police procedural the story holds together well (as someone who has had phases of bingeing Law & Order and NCIS). It's highly entertaining.

While the book inherits the strengths of this genre, however, it's worth mentioning that it also inherits some of its weaknesses. Without getting into spoilers, Elijah's actions—while consistent with the characterization that the author is going for—are, to put it lightly, ethically questionable, especially as he gets increasingly desperate over the course of the plot. To his credit (and unlike many other procedurals), the author is well aware of this and often calls attention to it through the other characters. Nevertheless, since Elijah is our protagonist, we are predisposed to viewing him in a sympathetic light, which may be a bridge too far for some readers.

The content itself is also intense, with visceral and sometimes graphic depictions of violence. This is of course also characteristic of police procedurals. I will say that the author is generally careful not to venture too far into the realm of the exploitative—but, again, exploitativeness is somewhat inherent to the genre. Many readers will be unbothered by this; others may feel it's too much. Personally, there were a couple of places where it became a bit too much for me, though not to the point where I didn't want to continue reading.

Those warnings aside, overall this is a gripping novel that will appeal to true-crime and furry fans alike. Renard is an excellent storyteller and I can't wait for his next book! ...more

With an engaging, well-paced plot and a refreshing take on the Gothic horror setting, it is a welcome addition to the canon of LGBTQ furry fiction.

One of the things I loved most while reading this novel was how it was able to take on an introspective tone without compromising the flow of the narrative. We follow the (post-) life of Radic Horban, a fox forever frozen in youth after a fateful encounter one century prior, as he tries to uncover the truth behind a series of violent attacks that have struck his hometown. His likable if brooding personality permeates the pages; even if we can’t specifically relate to what it’s like to be an immortal vampire (or so I assume!), his character is easy to empathize with as we become intimately familiar with his inner world. Where I have found that other books told from the first-person perspective can struggle to find the balance between introspective asides and “plot” passages, these are interwoven in The Blood of Life nearly seamlessly. The story itself is tight, well structured, and buoyed by a strong supporting cast, most notably Radic’s romantic foil, a sweet leopard named Ekrem.

The Blood of Life’s Gothic horror trappings are firmly grounded in 19th-century Eastern Europe: gloomy, foreboding, and perfectly complementing the horror aspects of its story. And this is indeed a vampire story, not merely a story with vampires in it! I greatly enjoyed NightEyes’s approach here, borrowing from traditional vampire lore while putting a furry twist on it. The supernatural elements of the book’s characters and story feel fully enmeshed in its setting, making for a cohesive and engrossing reading experience.

My one (very minor) criticism of the novel is simply that there isn’t more of it. While I would not want to add anything that would detract from its great pacing, there are aspects of the story I would have loved to have seen further developed. In particular, Radic and Ekrem have an easy chemistry, their scenes together are strong; I found myself wanting to see more of them together. More generally, I would say that The Blood of Life's focused story gives us a glimpse into its rich setting without fully exploring it. It is excellent as a standalone novel, nothing more is required of the book itself...but, speaking for myself, I would be eager to dig in deeper.

Overall, I loved The Blood of Life from cover to cover, and I’m positive that even the most casual fans of furry fiction will as well. Wholeheartedly recommended! ...more

One of the book’s many strengths is Raynarde’s natural-sounding dialogue, which allows the characters to really come alive. Mike in particular is the standout—his bright, artistic personality jumps right off the page, and I loved every minute reading his scenes. However, while the focus is on the romance between Gerald and Mike, and rightly so, I found myself having the strongest reactions during the interactions between Gerald and his alcoholic father. The complexity of navigating their strained relationship, having drifted apart in the wake of Gerald’s mother’s untimely death, was portrayed realistically and handled with nuance. The rest of the cast is also good, though they understandably take more of a back seat.

I also enjoyed the way that Gerald’s painting was integrated into the narrative. The theme of healing through artistic expression is one that resonates with me strongly, and the aesthetic symmetry between Gerald’s art and the events of his life was a nice touch. Music also features prominently, although this landed less strongly for me because I was unfamiliar with most of the songs mentioned. I would say that this is something of a minor issue—I’m a particularly “bad” reader in terms of picking up these kinds of references—but it did occasionally take me out of the story.

My main point of critique would be how Gerald’s inner monologue was written. While the dialogue between characters was strong, I sometimes found his thoughts to be a bit too direct, “telling” us rather than “showing”, which is a tricky balance to strike in first-person narratives. It was more noticeable towards the beginning—once the characters have been more firmly established, the novel hits its stride. On the whole the book is both written and edited well.

These nitpicks aside, A Portrait For Tomorrow is a very warm book, written with a care and pathos that shine through. I am glad to put it on my (growing) list of furry fiction recommendations, especially for fans of gay romance! ...more
