I really wanted to like this book. I just couldn't.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I generally cared about the characters and what happened to them, and the idea of a cafe where you can time travel is awesome.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I generally cared about the characters and what happened to them, and the idea of a cafe where you can time travel is awesome.
that being said, there were many reasons I couldn't get into the book. first, I didn't like the writing. It might have been the difficulty of translation, but it was too choppy and ... immature? ... if that makes sense. it reminds me of how I wrote in my middle school Wattpad days. not necessarily bad and the grammar is generally correct, but also not good for a published work.
there was a lot of repetition. a character saying something and then two seconds later, another character thinking "This character must feel x" when yes, that's literally what they said they felt. thank you.
or the fact that we heard the rules explained multiple times. not just a refresh but fully and thoroughly explained as if we'd never heard them before. or being fully explained what happened in a previous scene when we literally read that scene so yes, we should know.
I think my other big problem with the writing is that there is A LOT of telling but not showing. or worse, BOTH telling and showing. like, actions clearly showing a character is mad and then the character thinking "I'm mad about this." or just the character thinking that without the actions. I can tell you I don't often think to myself "I feel x about this." but if you listened to my thoughts, you could sure pick up on that emotion without me spelling it out for you.
Also, let's talk about the stupid rules. The whole "You can't change the present" rule is incorrect. The story opens with a woman whose boyfriend leaves to America. Later, the author gives the example that if a time traveler goes back and fatally shoots someone, that person would miraculously go to the hospital and be saved despite all odds.
But here's the thing: that does change the present, to some extent!
If the woman goes back and shoots her boyfriend, then he would have missed his flight to America, and who knows, he may have still been in recovery at the hospital when she was otherwise going back. Maybe this rule is suggesting that wouldn't happen, but the point is, he at least would have missed that flight and taken another one! That definitely changes the present in some way. I understand that in the end, he would still be in America, but I guarantee that SOMETHING would have changed. was he late for his job? did he move into a different apartment? did the woman decide to time travel later because she got to spend a bit more time with him?
Or another example, a woman time travels and is able to bring something from the past back with her. It was already established that what she brought back was something that another character had been holding onto for YEARS, including in the present timeline. But guess what? He doesn't have it anymore! He gave it away! Maybe he writes another one, but that still doesn't seem quite right. She changed the present because she was able to bring an object back to it. Adding an entire object to the timeline does indeed change it!
I have so many thoughts on this book because I had such high hopes. the way it was written was the biggest issue for me. the plot holes in terms of the rules would be annoying but could be overlooked. the writing? nope. absolutely took me out of the story. I truly understand if it was because it was translated, but that doesn't change the way I feel about it. ...more
