A New Country, A New Language

In the fall of 2019, I spent six weeks in Germany, living in the town where I had lived three decades earlier. It’s interesting returning to your past. I Made It on ‘The Real’

In late September I published an article on Forbes that got me a gig on ‘The Real.’ Well, sort of…. On the October 13 show, Loni Love opened a discussion on ageism by quoting from my article. Then an excellent discussion ensued on ageism and how it adds a layer of potential bias across other […]

It's hard to believe my six weeks adventure is almost up. The good news is that I have thousands of photos (literally) to remind me of my trip.

Visit to Germany Requires Gluten, Dairy & Soy Free Substitutes: It’s a Baking Challenge!

During a six-week visit to Germany, I've been scouring the stores for comparable substitutes for my diary, soy, and gluten-free requirements. When my friend said I couldn't make a cake without butter, I accepted the challenge.

Celebrating 29 Years of German Reunification: “Tag Der Deutschen Einheit”

When I first moved to Germany in 1985, I was working on an undergraduate degree in politics. As part of my program, I visited the German Bundesrat, a legislative body of appointed officials who, together with the Bundestag (elected), oversee policy and legislative decisions. At the time, the seat of government was in Bonn. During my visit, I remember feeling amused when the Bundesrat official described Bonn as the "temporary capital" until the East and West were reunited and the capital moved on...

Immersion Is the Best Way to Develop Foreign Language Skills

When visiting foreign-speaking countries for extended periods, there is added processing the brain is forced into to comprehend basics, like asking where the bathroom is or how to find the train station. For language learners, there is no better way to force the brain to make the neural connections and acquire the necessary language skills to get by.

Earning Customer Loyalty: It’s Easier Than You Think

Customer loyalty should be the number one priority for businesses. However, according to a Harvard Business Review article by Robert Simons, there is elasticity in the definition of “customer,” depending on the business. As a consumer, I need to be happy to remain loyal. For me, it boils down to service. When I think of companies […]
