Try to picture yourself as a Naval Officer used to all the regula-tions required aboard a US fighting ship and then after a mere 18 weeks of training, find yourself halfway around the world on an isolated island with three other Americans and 50 Vietnamese sailors and their dependents. All the rules get thrown out the window. Interacting socially while trying to provide sound military advice to people who have been at war for most of their lives, takes enormous amounts of diplomacy, patience and tact. But throughout it all, the job gets done despite the many strange events that occurred that will remain etched in my memory forever.
