“It's not the substance that hooks you, it's the emotions," he explained. "There is a crack somewhere in our spirits, and we have to heal that before anything.”
Antonio Michael Downing, Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming

“What was it like?" I asked him. "Did it make you feel better?"

"At first it was peaceful, but then the peace would fly away faster and faster, until there wasn't no peace, just doing it to do it.”
Antonio Michael Downing, Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming

“The powwow was a Crown-free space. It breathed life. It celebrated what things were before and what they would be for eternity.”
Antonio Michael Downing, Saga Boy: My Life of Blackness and Becoming

“I Go Down To The Shore

I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour the waves
are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am miserable,
what shall—
what should I do? And the sea says
in its lovely voice:
Excuse me, I have work to do.”
Mary Oliver, A Thousand Mornings: Poems
