Claire Polders is a Dutch author writing in English.

Her short prose has been published by Tin House, Electric Literature, Prairie Schooner, and Fiction International. She’s working on a memoir about elder abuse in Florida and a multi-generational novel about the dark Dutch colonial past. Her flash fiction collection Woman of the Hour: Fifty Tales of Longing and Rebellion is out now (2025).

Born in Gouda (yes, from the cheese), Claire grew up just outside Rotterdam, seven meters below sea level. She earned a double master’s degree in Literature and Philosophy and is married to an American writer. In 2019, they gave up their home, sold their stuff, and took off to roam the world.

She publishes a popular newsletter Wander, Wonder, Write (on Su

Albert Camus
“Man stands face to face with the irrational. He feels within him his longing for happiness and for reason. The absurd is born of this confrontation between the human need and the unreasonable silence of the world.”
Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays

Anne Carson
“Men know almost nothing about desire, they think it has to do with sexual activity or can be discharged that way. But sex is a substitute, like money or language. Sometimes I just want to stop seeing.”
Anne Carson

Annie Dillard
“We teach our children one thing only, as we were taught: to wake up. We teach our children to look alive there, to join by words and activities the life of human culture on this planet's crust. As adults we are almost all adept at waking up. We have so mastered the transition we make a hundred times a day, as, like so many will-less dolphins, we plunge and surface, lapse and emerge. We live half our waking lives and all of our sleeping lives in some private, useless, and insensible waters we never mention or recall. Useless, I say. Valueless, I might add — until someone hauls their wealth up to the surface and into the wide-awake city, in a form that people can use.”
Annie Dillard, Teaching a Stone to Talk: Expeditions and Encounters

Carmen Maria Machado
“No one knows what causes it. It’s not passed in the air. It’s not sexually transmitted. It’s not a virus or a bacteria, or if it is, it’s nothing scientists have been able to find. At first everyone blamed the fashion industry, then the millennials, and, finally, the water. But the water’s been tested, the millennials aren’t the only ones going incorporeal, and it doesn’t do the fashion industry any good to have women fading away. You can’t put clothes on air. Not that they haven’t tried.”
Carmen Maria Machado, Her Body and Other Parties: Stories

Carmen Maria Machado
“Many people live and die without ever confronting themselves in the darkness.”
Carmen Maria Machado, Her Body and Other Parties
