| I enjoyed the book. Its only shortcoming is too much self-denigrating introspection instead of more birding. | |

| After the umpteenth repetition of the term "bad birdwatcher", I had to give it up. Enough is enough of a cute phrase. Maybe I'll try to read further at a later date to see if it was just my mood. ...more | |

| The descriptions of birding events were very interesting. However, Levine had a tendency to ramble into self-analysis and analysis of his friends and family. Finally, I had to scan the pages, looking for actual birding to read about. | |

“It is always tedious when someone tells you that if you don't stop crying, they will give you something to cry about, because if you are crying then you already have something to cry about, and so there is no reason for them to give you anything additional to cry about, thank you very much.”

Some believe that the world can be decoded by performing research in a library. Others believe that the world can be decoded by reading a newspaper. In my case, the only thing that made sense of the world was you, and without you the world will seem as garbled and tragic as a malfunctioning typewrit9.”

“I'm sure you have heard it said that appearance does not matter so much, and that it is what's on the inside that counts. This is, of course, utter nonsense, because if it were true then people who were good on this inside would would never have to comb their hair or take a bath, and the whole world would smell even worse than it already does.”
