"Characters: Kieko and Aiko are adolescents with typical teen problems. They hate each other out of fear and jealousy, yet strive towards a common goal. Their mentor is reminiscent of an old samurai warrior mixed with a Buddhist priest. I thought at any moment he would say, "patience, young grasshopper." Their relationships with family and each other were my favorite parts. The pieces that fell flat for me surrounded the character building of the evil enemies.
"World Building: Set in the time of the fabled Atlantis, narrations by some wise and aged yet unknown lifeform interject the plot. We get to know the story of a previous generation, then focus for the remainder on Kieko's present. The descriptions of the temple and the Lemurian way of life paint an image of some remote untouched corner of the world.
"Writing Style: Domenico is gifted with the ability to draw the reader into a story, even if it's not their typical preferred type of story. The details are reminiscent of Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series. At times however, I felt the dialogue a bit overdone. Shinsei and Keiko especially would benefit from variation.
"What I Enjoyed: The relationships between all characters ring true and complex, which is not always easy to accomplish in the fantasy / sci-fi realm. Many of the action scenes are shocking yet realistic, which is appreciated in an adult series.
"Deal Benders: Why were the Atlanteans attacking? Were they even the Atlanteans at this point? What is behind this evil force? What motivates them to kill and destroy with such force? I had way too many questions about the motives and the whole point of the antagonist throughout. I think if this is to be a 6-part series each installment could be condensed by removing uber-detailed depictions and lengthy conversations.
"Overall Rating: 3.5 stars - An enjoyable read with a fresh premise. However, this first book does not warrant 616 pages.

In the spring of 2004 - after living in Tokyo, Japan for over three years pursuing a career as a freelance musician - science fiction and fantasy author Domenico Italo Composto-Hart set off on a half-year backpacking journey through the lands of East and Southeast Asia, Siberia, Central Russia, the Baltic states, the Nordic countries, and Eastern and Western Europe.
Traveling by foot, bus, train, and boat - and seeing the world through the analytical lens of anthropology, archaeology, and economics - Domenico documents, researches, and deciphers the developing nations he encounters as they rise through the turbulence of unregulated Western capitalism and globalization.
Travels in the Land of Hunger is the author's reflective account of the dark, long-lasting impact of Western colonialism and imperialism, the Vietnam War, the Khmer Rouge regime, the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and the sex tourism and sex trafficking industries in Southeast and East Asia. It is also a narrative of finding exotic beauty, inspiration, inner strength, and unexpected love.
Just updated my blog (after a two year hiatus) with a post entitled "The Sting and I" providing an account of the musical events (performing with Lene Nystrom of Aqua and meeting Sting backstage) that led to my exit from Japan to pursue a six-month, solo backpacking journey through East and Southeast Asia, Siberia, Central Russia, the Baltic states, the Nordic countries, and Eastern and Western Europe.This will be the first in a weekly to biweekly series of posts providing excerpts of chapters from my forthcoming travel memoir entitled Travels in the Land of Hunger, which will be published internationally on November 21, 2019.

The People's Republic of China rose to primacy during the 2030s - the decade that the European Union dissolved as rising nationalism, populism, and xenophobia ripped the political and economic fabric of the confederation apart - leaving the continent to fall dangerously into another Dark Age.
This is the forbidding world that maverick MotoGP rider Lleónart Blanc was born into. Sponsored by his corporate patron Takagawasan, the White Lion will deliver the first Grand Prix World Championship to the Federation of Catalan City-States in 2056. A victory meant to ignite an insurgence against the autocratic order of the Federation of North African States.

The story was originally published in Issue 5 (September 2011) of Science Fiction Freedom E'zine by Peter Saga.
The cover illustration for the story was by Wayne Haag (concept artist for such films as The Fellowship of the Rings, The Wolverine, and The Maze Runner).
The story will ultimately be expanded into a full length novel, but I must first complete a travel memoir I've been working on while trying to find time to complete a first draft of Dark Legacy: Book II - Travels.
