Saturday Sinema #76 - In The Eye of the Hurricane

I think I mentioned before, perhaps the week we watched A Quiet Place To Kill, that Jean Sorel has to be one of the luckiest bastards on the planet. It seems that every one of his movies takes place in a sunny seaside paradise, filled with luxury and beautiful women. But then he always goes and fucks everything up and nine times out of ten ends up dead or in jail. This flick is no different. Seems he's broken up a marriage and has run off to the coast with his mistress. They run into and old pal of his and a funky triangle develops between them. Bad shit happens. This is a typically groovy giallo made at the height of Sorel's career in Euro-sleaze and also features Jess Franco fave Rosanna Yanni. Fuck yeah! Perfect for a sunny weekend...we all need one of those. I know I sure as hell do. Relax and enjoy!

Saturday Sinema #75 - Night of the Scorpion

Oliver doesn't waste any fucking time. A year after the accidental death of his first wife, he decides to bring his new bride to the family mansion. Domestic bliss is thwarted by a black-gloved, razor wielding slasher, and the fact that his whole family and the mansion staff seem to hate her. Featuring the extremely lovely Daniela Giordano, this little-seen flick will do you right. All will be revealed if you just relax and sit back, favorite beverage in hand... Let your cares slip away and enjoy this slice of '70s Spanish good times.... Filmed inside one of the largest Marie Callender's ever, this one features lotsa drinking and lotsa smoking... English speakers be sure to activate the subtitles, this one is presented in its original Spanish language the way God intended....

Saturday Sinema #74 - Blackmail

Naughty little rich bitch Brigitte Skay (who, in a Stanislavskian master-stroke, manages to be simultaneously topless and annoying) hatches a plan to have herself "kidnapped" so she can extort money from her daddy. They're all the same, these rich tarts. And it's all because of that evil pot the kids are smoking these days.... Things go south when her bitch of a stepmother, played by the ridiculously sexy Rosalba Neri, throws herself into the mix. I fail to see the problem here.... The perfected art of hostage negotiation is on full display beginning at the 1:02:00 mark. Fans of Italian and Spanish psychotronic cult epics will recognize both of the female leads in this one; Skay appeared in Mario Bava's groundbreaking slasher Bay of Blood, while Neri appeared in just about everything from Franco's 99 Women, Lady Frankenstein, and Giallo classic, Amuck. Little seen anywhere in the world, Blackmail will easily pay off the ransom of your cinematic needs... Dig it.

Saturday Sinema #73 - The Long Hair of Death

Having your mother accused of witchcraft sucks. I guess in today's world it wouldn't be so bad - Oprah might interview you, or, at the very least, you'd qualify for some kind of government assistance. But back in the 15th century such an accusation sucked indeed. With one foot in the Middle Ages and the other in the Renaissance, 15th century folks didn't have much to fall back on. Such a dilemma is the basis for this week's flick, another great Italian Gothic from Antonio Margheriti. Barbara Steele, fresh off Black Sunday, here again plays dual roles as siblings caught in a web of witchy goings on... Gotta love these Gothics, filmed in glorious back and white. These films may be remade, but they'll never be duplicated. Dig it...

Saturday Sinema #72 - The Hook

Greece. Greece is the word - it's got groove, it's got meaning...Greece is the time, is the place, is the motion. Greece is the way we are feeling... So, Kostas is a Greek, Andy Warhol-esque tycoon (isn't every Warhol-esque tycoon Greek?). His wife, Iro (played by the exquisitely naughty Barbara Bouchet), is a cheating bitch. She and her lover plan to off his ass during a yachting regatta. I guess if you gotta be murdered it might as well be during a yachting regatta. Fuck yeah. Plots are twisted, backs are stabbed, cigarettes are smoked, people dance, a shitload of grapes are eaten, and many plates are smashed. Dig it. Greece. Greece is the word....

Saturday Sinema #71 - Paganini

Klaus-fucking-Kinski... Where to start? This is a question I ask myself whenever I think of Kinski. Where to start?... The answer to that question would be anywhere, I suppose... Kinski believed that his life experiences paralleled those of Paganini, and, seeing as they both fucked anything that moved, I guess you could say he was right. Paganini could supposedly bring women to orgasm with his music - Kinski could do so with the veins in his forehead. Paganini was the last film Kinski ever made, and his directorial debut to boot, featuring lotsa violin, lotsa muff, and wall-to-wall flailing intensity, this one has to be seen to be believed...

Saturday Sinema #70 - The Devil With Seven Faces

Carroll Baker... I don't know why this broad even leaves the house. It seems she's always getting into trouble. This time she's mistaken for her twin sister by a gang of fucked-up jewel thieves. That sucks. Carroll is always being pestered by people who want to take advantage of her or rough her up in some way. Always. Whether it's Paranoia, A Quiet Place To Kill, or any of the other wonderfully barftastic Giallo epics she appeared in, her situation doesn't change. But it so easily could have if she'd only said yes after the first line in the film: "Are you sure I can't persuade you to come with us to the Kon Tiki..." And the thought of two Carroll's floating around out there, flailing in the face of fate, magnets for corrupt, scheming motherfuckers...well... Please enjoy this one folks. And have a nice weekend...

Saturday Sinema #69 - Black Cobra Woman

Who's nuttier than a fruitcake? Jack Palance, that's who. There's just something off about the guy. I mean, if Christopher Walken is the human ellipses, then Palance is the human semicolon; he's a master of pregnant pauses and tangents. So, throw Jack in the middle of '70s Hong Kong, give him a penthouse pad full of snakes, then add Laura Gemser (one of cult filmdom's top boner instigators) as an exotic snake charmer to the mix, all filmed under the leering eye of Joe D'Amato (Aristide Massaccesi), and what do you have? You've got fucking lightning in a bottle, my friend. Seems Jack is obsessed with Laura after he catches her show one night. Who wouldn't be, okay? So, naturally, he decides to slither into her life by buying her lots of shit. A sort of funky triangle develops between Jack and Laura, and Jack's brother - you know how these things turn out (I mean Palance plays a character named Judas for goodness sake...). Anyway, there's lotsa snakes, lotsa muff, and lotsa Palance in this week's flick. If even one of these factors floats your boat, then stick around and check this one out. You won't be disappointed. Dig it.

Saturday Sinema #68 - Mill of the Stone Women

Some dude named Hans, fresh off the boat, stumbles across a decrepit windmill occupied by an old fart and his daughter, or niece, or mistress - I can't really remember which right now... Anyway, the young buck is set to write a story on the reclusive old sculptor, and on his first visit gets a peek or two at the alluring, enigmatic beauty of this aloof filly (daughter, niece, mistress - I'm going with daughter, ok?) and, well, you know, he's smitten... One thing leads to another, and as is always the case, the old sculptor dude is fucked in the head and is making some funky wax "dummies" in his pad. Will our hero rescue the stoic bitch from certain waxy doom? You won't know until you reach the end...but you really do know how this one will turn out, don't you...? Shit house mouse... This one was filmed at the same time Mario Bava was shooting Black Sunday in the studio next door. The influence of Bava on this flick has lead several critics (most prominently Tim Lucas, editor of the amazing, indispensable journal Video Watchdog) to theorize that Bava, as was his usual lot, either shot or even directed certain sequences, uncredited. The trained eye can certainly pick up similarities in style, and the idea is not that far-fetched... Regardless, this celluloid sucker-punch of a movie is one of the foundations of Euro-horror, and an amazing film (easily rivaling any of Roger Corman's Poe pictures) to boot. So gang, as I suggest to you all each week, just kick back, indulge in your favorite libation, and dig the hell out of this one...

Saturday Sinema #67 - The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh

So Edwige Fenech marries this older dude, but while he's away her creepy ex gets in touch and tries to convince her only he can untangle her tingle. Seems they were into some kinky shit way back when, and even though she resists, the kink is still strong. She also meets another dude who pours on the charm, and eventually this gets him into her pants. While all this shit is going on, some batshit mofo is running around town slashing people. It isn't long before our little menage a trois is caught up in the middle of all this. Can't a gal have an affair without being hounded by a maniac anymore? Sheesh! A giallo somehow doesn't feel right without Edwige Fenech starring in it, and this is one of her best. All the usual tropes are here - we know the game we're playing by now, don't we folks? Directed by Fenech's frequent collaborator Sergio Martino, this is top notch giallo grooviness... Kick it and dig it. It's been a long week - you've earned this.
