Often, solutions do not emerge directly from others’ suggestions. When articulating the problem, it helps one to clarify a potential resolution. In the narrative of “My Buddy Bali,” my main concern was ensuring Bali’s safe transition from one location to another. In a bustling city, any security lapse could endanger a puppy's life. I recall consulting with my friend David on safely transporting Bali from Toronto to Buffalo. This conversation sparked the idea of Bali being taken by individuals who saw value in keeping him, leading to the development of the petty thieves’ subplot. To advance the story to Dr. Wojcik’s residence, I devised a scenario where the train halts before departing the Buffalo metropolitan area, and the idea of the blizzard came out. Another challenge I faced was crafting the theft of scientific information in the chapter “The Story of Motuou and David.” To resolve this, I conducted thorough research and reviewed the literature on the topic. Researching how other authors have navigated similar issues is invaluable. Maintaining the story’s momentum is crucial unless a deliberate pause is needed for rest and creative rejuvenation or to recharge your batteries. This insight was gained after prematurely publishing my latest book: “My Buddy Bali: A Tourist in Kisses and Tears.” book. Patience is the key to finding the optimal ideas for your work. Otherwise, one may find themselves in the position I did. I have to complete two revisions and republish it to achieve complete satisfaction.(less)

Then, there are several other rewards, some measurable in terms of money and others in terms of personal satisfaction. These may include things like the ability to bring ideas, emotions, and worlds to life through words. The writing, per se, offers a variety of forms of self-expression, allowing one to delve deeper into one’s thoughts. It allows ones to communicate meaningfully with others and influences readers’ prospections of reality. Other satisfying aspects include creative freedom. One can make up stories, create characters, or explore complex ideas instead. The emotional catharsis in writing can also be therapeutic, helping one to process emotions and experiences as one writes about them. Something I’m learning to appreciate quite a bit is the connection with the experiences shared by readers. One’s words can inspire, entertain, or comfort, creating a sense of shared understanding. I normally write to inform or for entertainment. Nonetheless, on “My Body Bali” I touched on very serious present concerns like climate change, social inequality/struggles, and bounding and coping with the loss of loved ones. So, being a writer is a process of continuous learning. Whether researching for a novel, developing a new writing style, or honing storytelling, writing is a journey of constant growth. Finally, one exciting aspect of being a writer is the perpetuity of one’s mortality through words. A good work could endure beyond the author’s lifetime and leave a lasting impact on the world. In short, the most valuable thing about being a writer varies depending on what motivates you, whether telling stories, expressing your thoughts, or giving shape to ideas that resonate with others.(less)

Acknowledgement to my inner-child Leu-e

My precious Leu-e, you are the quiet voice I sometimes forget to hear, the tender curiosity that first dared to imagine impossible things. You are the one who scribbled soldiers, trains, musical notes, hieroglyphics, random doodles, flowers, hearts or monsters in the margins of homework, who turned stormy afternoons into epic adventures fought with wooden swords or playing with the Barbie and Ken Read more of this blog post »
