Superman (2025) - Movie Review

Though I did enjoy the original 1978 Superman movie ("You've got me? Who's got you?" is one of my favorite movie lines), I always had a hard time getting into Superman stories. He's just too perfect. Too OP. Which is exactly why I loved Superman the 2025 edition - it made him vulnerable and relatable without sacrificing the core of the character.
The movie begins with Superman losing his first fight, just one of many setbacks he faces during the film. He's also gettin...

Five Post-Apocalyptic Reads to Check Out

I've featured several post-apocalyptic book series on here before, including my two favorites: Edge of Collapse and EMP Aftermath. In this post, I highlight a few others that might be of interest to fans of Blackout Trail. These mini-reviews focus only on book 1 in the series.

The Alice Network - Book Review

As both a WW1 buff and a student of women in wartime, it's amazing (and slightly embarrassing) that I'd never heard of the real-life Alice Network before picking up this novel by Kate Quinn. Similar to the Special Operations Executive in WW2, the Alice Network was a group of spies operating in occupied France during the First World War. The Alice Network is an emotional, sometimes heart-rending, tale of friendship and red...

Jurassic World: Rebirth - Movie Review

I have a pretty low bar when it comes to the Jurassic Park franchise. Fun action, people getting chased by dinosaurs, cool CGI creatures—that's really all I need. And in that regard, the latest installment in the Jurassic World series, Jurassic World: Rebirth, delivered. It wasn't amazing, but it was good enough for a summer popcorn movie.
🦕Check out my other Jurassic World reviews. The film focuses on a team venturing into the off-limits equatorial zone where...

Women in War Stories - 2025 Edition

It's become an annual Memorial Day tradition for me to highlight women in war stories, in honor of the soldiers (of all genders) who have given their lives in our conflicts.
Read other editions of my Women in War Stories series.
This year was a treat. A couple movies I'd been looking forward to came out, I got around to watching one that had been on my list for several years now, and I discovered a few unexpectedly good books. It was a welcome improvement over previous years of scouring the intern...

Into the Gray Zone - Book Review

Pike Logan is back in another action-packed military/political adventure. Focusing on the hybrid battles being fought in the "Gray Zone" between today's superpowers, it feels reminiscent of Cold War intrigue. With great characters, tense action, and lots of twists, it's a solid addition to the series.
Book Description:While on a routine security assessment in India, Taskforce operator Pike Logan foils an attempted attack on...

Special Delivery - Book Review

Special Delivery by Rex Burke had me at "Starship Troopers meets SAS Rogue Heroes." As a huge fan of both these things, I had to check it out. It didn't disappoint.
Book Description:A dangerous mission. A second chance.
Actually, scratch that. No chance.
Dix’s career as a trooper in the Federation army is unblemished – until the day he disobeys a direct order and strikes an officer.
Now Dix has a choice. Face a life of hard labour that promises to be brut...

The Road Home - Book Review

While researching The Women a few months ago, I saw mention of a similar, older book: The Road Home by Ellen Emerson White. Intrigued, I checked it out. What I found was a riveting tale of a young nurse in Vietnam, as compelling as The Women, but without the problematic elements.
Book Description:Not all victims were soldiers... Lieutenant Rebecca Phillips went to Vietnam as a nurse, to heal and give comfort, and maybe to find answe...

D.C. Fall - Book Review

D.C. Fall by K.K. Johns(*) was my first exposure to the In the October Fall World extended universe, the MCU of EMP disaster fiction. Spinoffs from the original October Fall series by Mark Loren and Boyd Craven Jr., each book (or set of books) is written by a different author and features a different region. There's Black Hills Fall, Indiana Fall, California Fall, etc. Each location stands alone, so the books can be read in any order. I jump...

The Women - Book Review

The service of women in our wars is all-too-often overlooked, as I highlight every year with my Women in War Stories series. The Women, by Kristin Hannah, focuses on what could be one of the most neglected stories of all: that of the military nurses in Vietnam. When the main character, nurse Frankie McGrath, returns home from war, she is constantly met with the refrain, "There were no women in Vietnam." Fortunately, stories like this remind us that ther...
