Award winning author Ute Carbone pronounces her first name Oohtah, but doesn't spell it that way. She lives with her husband in Southern NH, where she spends her days drinking coffee, eating chocolate, walking in the woods, and dreaming up stories.

There's been a long list of things I've wanted to be. Some of them were fanciful- ballerina, trapeze artist, world class ski racer. Some more serious-doctor, oceanographer, bookstore owner. Some I've actually accomplished- teacher, mother, workshop leader.
I've always loved to read books but for most of my life I never would have imagined myself writing them. Oh, I scribbled. I wrote songs for my guitar when I was a teen. I kept a journal in college. When my children were small, I began to write

I've written novels that are funny, novels that are dramatic, and novels that are historical along with a bunch of short stories and poems. I can tell you that each thing I write comes with it's own set of challenges. Even in the same genre, no two projects are the same.
There are, of course, some things we are better at than others. I love writing dialog, and I love the rhythm of language. I'm a terrible speller and am often stymied by silly things, unsure of whether or not to use a comma and so forth. I tend to repeat words. All of this is fixable--and why a good editor is invaluable. The usual advice I mete out --only when asked, of course *grins* -- is to write a lot and read a lot and then write some more. It is sound advice, and I'm certainly not the only one who has offered it. But as I look back, I think my beginner already knew to do those things. We all know practice makes you better at what you do. And most writers I've met are avid readers first.
The other thing, though, the thing we don't talk about as often, is the courage it takes to write. Facing down a blank page can be like standing on the high dive. Maybe it's your first time, or maybe you've taken the dive a thousand times before, but each time there's a thrum in your ear, a roiling in your gut. You know you can do it, or you think you can, and the water is mirror smooth and blue and inviting. But it is a long way down. And if you've done it before, you know it can go wrong, and the smooth blue water will feel like concrete as you crash into it.
My advice is do it anyway. Close your eyes and jump. Pull out the stops and write with your whole heart, your whole being. All good writing comes from this, the thrilling jump forward, the deep dive, the resurfacing. (less)

#Poetry Kenosha

The happenings of these past few weeks have been rolling around in my head. I've come up with two poems, both still raw, but this one seems about done...

Kenosha
Cradle the weapon and sing
 a lullaby, my son
The way I taught you when you were young,
before you were able
to read the words bullet and gun.
Sing of great America, my son.
I will take you
Where cities burn and chaos runs.

“The kiss was flight, the kind of kiss that had magic I hadn’t known existed. Or maybe it was the kind of kiss that I had known long before but had all but forgotten, like the scent of roses once they’re no longer in bloom.”
Ute Carbone, The Whisper of Time

“Sometimes you have to work hard for what you want. Sometimes, hard work is what makes it precious.”
Ute Carbone, Blueberry Truth

“You said you wanted Superman. And when Superman comes along, you give him the stink eye."
"I did not."
"Yes you did," Steve said. "If looks could kill, poor Superman would be a goner.”
Ute Carbone, Searching for Superman

“Sometimes you have to work hard for what you want. Sometimes, hard work is what makes it precious.”
Ute Carbone, Blueberry Truth

“I’d believed in that story, the story of us. It was still there,
that antiquated fairy tale notion. I was older now, though, and it was
time to let the fairy tale go.”
Ute Carbone, Afterglow

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.”
alice walker, The Color Purple

“There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.”
Willa Cather, The Song of the Lark

“I'm not young enough to know everything.”
J.M. Barrie, The Admirable Crichton
