Rohase Piercy was born in London in 1958 and now lives in Brighton (on the South Coast of England) with her husband Leslie, dog Spike and a fluctuating number of racing pigeons. She has two grown-up daughters.

Unless we're thinking cross dressing, in which case Holmes would have to be someone with a strong, challenging face - Tamsin Greig? Gemma Whelan might make a good Watson in that scenario - I was very impressed with her performance as 'A Perfect Gentleman' in the recent BBC series of monologues 'Queers'.(less)

Not that Norrell would have me as a pupil, being such a misogynist, and Strange would be too busy with all his adventures; but maybe I could come in at the end of the story, and join the reconstructed Learned Society of York Magicians when it opens its membership to anyone, regardless of gender or social class, who genuinely wants to study Magic ...(less)

Skint Estate: A Memoir of Poverty, Motherhood and Survival Skint Estate: A Memoir of Poverty, Motherhood and Survival by Cash Carraway

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm not part of the intended readership for this raw and harrowing memoir - the privileged, comfortably-off majority against whom the author periodically rants - in fact, I was put in the way of reading it by my (now adult) daughter, who pointed out the similarities between Cash's story and our ow Read more of this blog post »

Readable but rather plodding story about a man whose UFO-obsessed girlfriend disappears without trace one day, and his frantic search to find her. As might be imagined, it takes him to some very wacky places, and the plot is great, but for me the nar ...more

“Although we have shared lodgings for seven years, we are not--on intimate terms."

I spoke earnestly, for I certainly could not afford to have her misunderstand the situation. She regarded me seriously.

"You are very fond of him, however, and would wish things otherwise," she said.

I gripped the edge of my seat and did not reply. Turning to look at the street, I observed that we were just passing the door of the Cafe Royal and were approaching Regent Circus. I shifted my gaze abruptly to the swaying interior of the hansom. I felt Miss D'Arcy's eyes upon me.
