I’ve loved books before I could read and been writing stories as soon as I could.

I finished my first novel Me, Myself and Colin whilst avoiding a BA in philosophy and started my second novel, Death of a Dream-Pedlar as part of an MA in writing.

Since then I’ve written a pastiche of 18th Century novels, a tale of obsolete mind control machines and a mystery surrounding a group of bunker enthusiasts. I’ve also written the blog ‘The Grub St Lodger’ for over fifteen years, written up gatherings of the Dr Johnson Reading Circle and reviewed London theatre for The Reviews Hub.

At the moment, I am planning a trilogy about eighteenth century writers and beginning with the story of a teen-age Samuel Johnson.

Adam Stevenson I have a life full of silliness and anecdote but not of mystery. Would love to know how I reminded that guy of his girlfriend though.
Adam Stevenson I always read a challenge book in the summer. I’m very tempted by ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’.

I wrote my first story when I was seven and never really stopped. I finished my first novel when I was twenty and knew from then that all I wanted to be in life was an author.

I wrote a lot after that. All sorts of novels, failed novels, short stories and articles. I wrote and I wrote and I wrote, and there were some successes. My first novel was rejected by all the best publishers, this was back Read more of this blog post »

I didn’t feel very confident about The Rose Field when I started. I had found The Secret Commonwealth to be unsettling and inconclusive, relying on The Rose Field to elevate the new trilogy into something great or leave it as something best forgotten ...more

My copy of Mary Alden Hopkins’s Dr Johnson’s Lichfield looks like a fairly sedate affair, possibly even a little bit dry, but perfect for getting myself back into eighteenth century Lichfield as I return to writing my novel in Samuel Johnson’s little ...more
