A retired librarian and debut novelist, Paulette Brooks was born in Toronto and lived in Canada for the first half of her life. According to her Scottish grandfather, they had a distant family connection to the explorer David Livingstone. She lives with her husband outside of Indianapolis where, when not writing, she loves to read, bake pies, garden, and work on jigsaw puzzles, all the while trying to keep up with the activities of her six grandchildren.

Charlotte Brontë
“I have for the first time found what I can truly love–I have found you. You are my sympathy–my better self–my good angel–I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wrap my existence about you–and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”
Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Carol Shields
“Open a book this minute and start reading. Don’t move until you’ve reached page fifty. Until you’ve buried your thoughts in print. Cover yourself with words. Wash yourself away. Dissolve.”
Carol Shields, The Republic of Love

Leo Tolstoy
“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
Leo Tolstoy , Anna Karenina

Books fall open, you fall in.
“Books fall open, you fall in.”
David T.W. McCord

Laura McBride
“But if, sometimes, an unspeakable horror arises from the smallest error, I choose to believe that it’s possible for an equally unimaginable grandeur to grow from the tiniest gesture of love. I choose to believe that it works both ways. That great terror is the result of a thousand small but evil choices, and great good is the outcome of another thousand tiny acts of care.”
Laura McBride, We Are Called to Rise
