This Writer’s Brain

The 1st draft of my 3rd book, Girl Sex 101,is done and off to my editor and illustrator. (Learn more about the book here)

I’ve been “done” for a week, and I’m going a little nuts. Yes, there’s more to do, but this is the weird lull that after 3 books I’ve grown to hate. An efficient writer/publisher would use this downtime to work on press releases, tweak the production calendar, and cross all the paperwork “t’s”. I’ve done it before. But for this book, my circumstances are different. I now ha...

Why I’m Never Selling on Consignment Again

There are many frustrating realities of being a self-published author: unfriendly review policies, managing your own production, stigma, and more. Now, after self-publishing two books and prepping the third, I’ve decided to improve my quality of life by fixing one of these frustrating realities: I’m not selling on consignment to bookstores anymore.

Consignment works like this: You loan a bookstore your books. If they sell them, they pay you, if they don’t, they either give the books back, sell...

All Things Being Equal – Hollywood’s Casting Problem

When Cloud Atlas came out last year, many people (who weren’t familiar with the book or movie) were rightly pissed. There were shouts of yellow face, the usual “Hollywood is racist” articles, and the mystification as to why anyone would cast white actors in Asian roles at all, especially when prostheses were necessary.

Then, there were the expected responses: The script called for trans-racial performances (and it did), the actors were the right ones for the job (eh), and roles should just go...

Belated Reaction to Kickstarter’s Apology

When everything went down with the “How to Sexually Assault Women” PUA Kickstarter project, I was incensed. It was just one more insult added to the barrage of sexist, misogynistic, and hateful rhetoric hurled at women and good men in what appears to be a banner year for this kind of bullshit. And it was one more piece of evidence that the shitty men are winning. The PUA piece of shit earned $16K for his project, and impressionable and lonely men who backed the project will get all the wrong...

Goodbye Kickstarter: I Don’t Support Orgs That Support Rapists

As you may have heard today, Kickstarter has decided to honor the funding of a “How to Sexually Assault Women” book, despite the fact that the project is a clear violation of Kickstarter’s own Terms of Service, which prohibits the submission of content that is:

“unlawful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, libelous, deceptive, fraudulent,

tortious, obscene, offensive, profane, or invasive of another’s privacy”

It’s disappointing for many reasons, not least of which is indie artists (li...
