Joyce Hinnefeld is an Emerita Professor of English at Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA and a program facilitator for the prison education and support program www.shining-light.com. She is the author of a short story collection, Tell Me Everything (1998), which was awarded the 1997 Breadloaf Writer's Conference Bakeless Prize in fiction in 1997, and of the novels In Hovering Flight (2008) and Stranger Here Below (2010), the story collection The Beauty of Their Youth (2020), and the forthcoming novel in stories The Dime Museum (August 2025).

I like the Flaubert quote that many writers (writing about writing) have shared: “Talent is a long patience, and originality an effort of will and intense observation." We live in a place and time where things happen so quickly--many would say too quickly--and I think this can make us unrealistic in our expectations about writing. Let the writing take the time it takes. Don't place too much pressure on yourself. And write for yourself, for as long as it takes. Only put the work out there for others when you're sure you're ready.(less)

A series of connected stories, set in Philadelphia, Chicago, Venice, and Lisbon (at this point) and dealing with--among other things--early twentieth-century American poets and art collectors, and their strange and ongoing influence.

But also some interviews and essays connection with my new story collection, THE BEAUTY OF THEIR YOUTH. And, somewhere in there, some personal essays that draw on memories of my parents, growing up in the rural Midwest, and more. And also a novel, set in the rural Midwest in a near, recognizable, and dire future--but with glimmers of hope.(less)
