Ugly Egg (Melodia Excerpt)

An excerpt from the most popular poem in my spooky poetry collection, MELODIA (available via Lulu.com or as e-ARC for reviewers).

THE UGLY EGG ~

Once, an egg had cracked its head,
out the fissures poems it bled,
mutterings of black Elmer glue,
They’re going to get you~

A darkness revealed feathered friends won’t let in,
so forbidden tales a smiley face gated within,
self-exploration smiling egg forsaken,
the muse went asleep and was told not to awaken,

On threads of grass the cracked egg crawls,
behind a rolling shadow began to sprawl,
the harder the egg smiled without words,
the more friends it made with meek little birds,

Until the shadow grew long and long,
and the birds flew away for they knew this egg was wrong.

Seeking a fantastic tale to belong,
the egg rolled through lands on and on,
passing through stories told in song,
the egg asked denizens whereupon—

A cackling canine, fiddling feline,
a cow leaping over the moon,
and a marathoning dish and spoon—
if the egg could join and play a tune.

The cow flicked her tail and mooed,
Nothing for you! Begone! Shoo-shoo!

Egg spun away sobbing, What a Nazi! Boo-hoo-hoo,
rolling past a great wall signed: no friends here too.

Down the long road, there was an old woman in a shoe,
who offered the egg a home in a stew,
to which the egg yelped, No, thank you!

Then not before long, upon a big hill,
the egg witnessed two children tumble with a big shrill,
and again, there were no friends for the egg still.

Finally, the egg diddled down Muffin Man Lane
passing a girl fleeing from a sheep biting her cane,
down a dead end where tales of the known world wane.

So, the egg rolled into a place where none go,
where flowers grew faces, bushes blink eyes that glow,
and wildwood shadow titter under the tangled grow.

Gnarled trees moaned, Welcome to the unknown,
farther down darkness the egg crawled alone.
over ivies leashed around a floor of bones,
toddling upon a break in the canopy where sun shone
on four words engraved in stone: All ye lost, leap

Around the rim ivies and bones kiss,
a hole oozing a nose-wrinkling hiss,
of whispers of spirits beyond emptiness,
temptress promises beckoning the lost to abyss,
slender hands offering to unravel the mask of bliss:
*Give yourself to me and I shall riddance you of this.*
