The Beverly Hills Hotel

Too Old to be a Hooker...Too Young to be a Madam

Chapter Two
The Pink of Perfection, The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Polo Lounge

The legend of the Beverly Hills Hotel and my charmed lifestyle began when I sat in my cabana satisfying a ferocious appetite and quenching my great thirst for life with a club sandwich and thick chocolate shake, then dove into the sprawling Olympic-sized aqua swimming pool to work off all those sinful calories. It seems like every memorable occasion in my life was cause for a celebration at this grand old watering hole. My sweet sixteen party and my first wedding reception were held under the crystal chandeliers, I had the chutzpah to invite all my ex-boyfriends. The second marriage was toasted with friends over guacamole and Dom Perignon after sliding into the rich forest green leather booth at the Polo Lounge. I even frequently took up residence and held court in one of the bungalows to celebrate my divorces.

My bashes were like a scene from ‘California Suite’ that would have made Neil Simon look like Simple Simon. I made many entrances climbing the oval-shaped staircase dressed to the nines in grand style, but never hung with the ladies who do lunch and the power dining. Although I regretfully admit that at some of my most romantic moments, while being courted at the Polo Lounge by some ardent admirers with Sterling Silver Roses, I had one of my girlfriends page me, just so I'd feel like I was in the mainstream, you know, cool. Such nostalgia.

Those long Sunday brunches beneath a sculptured 86-year-old Brazilian Pepper tree; surrounded by a paradise of tropical foliage, sipping freshly-squeezed orange juice, devouring Dutch Apple Pancakes serenaded by a roaming Mariachi band and roaming Spouses.
The real history of the Beverly Hills Hotel cannot be found in my diary. Like an intricate mosaic, it must be assembled piece by piece, from faded registration cards, Hollywood gossip columns, and the memories of doormen, seasonal bellmen and Maitre D's.
