Well, a mystery from our life actually became the inspiration for the inciting incident in our debut novel, CODEBREAKER.

When Andy (the "Jay" in Jay Martel) was in middle school, he woke one night to the sound of a gunshot. A road rage incident had spiraled into a shooting, and the victim had found his way into Andy's backyard, where he was lying in the flower garden, digging. Andy's dad, a Vietnam Vet, ended up performing first aid and saving the man's life. Later, his dad told him that the man had been digging his own grave. That it was something primal he'd, unfortunately, seen before in war.

Years later, Katy (the "Martel" in Jay Martel) would tell Andy, "that would be a pretty wild way to start a novel." And that's how CODEBREAKER began.(less)
