Try not to c…moreTo remember that it is a process that will likely take longer than you anticipated. First drafts will always require editing. Keep going. Try not to compare yourself to others - it can stop you from writing and working on your ideas when everybody's ideas and writing styles are different. The important thing is to finish a project, no matter what state it's in!
When the shadow of self-doubt emerges, acknowledge it, and do your best to move past it. These are normal feelings, but you must allow for confidence in your own work. It can feel lonely sometimes; all writers are in their own boats, in the same sea.(less)

It was initially a short story about two people who were stayi…moreThe idea for 'Jack and Hattie' was actually one that came to me about twelve years ago. It was initially a short story about two people who were staying in a beach hut. I imagined them arguing and one fleeing to the beach. Then, I began to wonder: what happened to them? Would they be okay? What had they been through, to end up like this?

Eighteen months later, I had a full-length novel. Reading through it again, it felt too farfetched and I wasn't sure what genre it fell into. It didn't have a place. Off it went, into the bottom drawer. I revisited the story two years ago and developed it, rewrote it and here we are! It's truly a story I'm proud of and am so glad the world can meet these characters now and follow their journey. (less)
