John J. Gaynard is from the West of Ireland, with roots both in Galway and Mayo. Living in Paris since the 1970s, he as worked extensively in Africa (mostly the French speaking countries), the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the United States. Speaking French equally as well, worse or better than he speaks English he manages to survive in spite of having a tendency to complicate matters verbally. 'Nobody I Know' is his fifth novel.

The BookViral review of 'Nobody I Know' begins: "Take a deep breath and enter the mind of John J Gaynard. An author with a fiery intellect and an imagination to match, his new release Nobody I Know is sure to captivate its readers as Gaynard takes us on a warped psychological thriller that keeps us guessing till

Usually one difficulty leads to another and the character paints him or herself into a series of corners, from which I have to help decide an escape route. My periods of blockage usually happen when I can't find the escape route, and they are usually resolved when an idea comes to me at three o'clock in the morning or in the shower or when I'm taking a long walk. While I'm waiting for the answer to come I read seven or eight hours a day.(less)

I'm thinking of writing a book based on the little I know, but feel restrained by the fact that there are still people alive (who could tell me, but haven't) who might be hurt. (less)

Nobody I Know Makes Kesey's 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' Look Like a Comic Book

Buy from Amazon.comHerebelow is the first review of Nobody I Know that was contributed to Amazon.com.

"When I first began reading 'Nobody I Know', I could not help but think of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' by Ken Kesey. Kesey's book about the state of psychiatric facilities and treatment in the early '60s became a major motion picture; the book was, and is still on lists of all time great Read more of this blog post »

Richard, my knowledge of Vidocq comes from the way Victor Hugo used him to create the characters of Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Les Misérables. I'll have to learn more about how he came to be acknowledged as the father of modern French criminal investigation. I also need to read more of Terry Pratchett's novels.

Cheers,
John

Richard Interesting blog entry on Boltanski! There's also the phenomenon of the "crook turned copper." I'm not sure whether we've discussed this already, so pardon my memory lapse if we have. But have you read anything about Vidocq? He influenced 19th century French literature as well.

Also, are you a fan of Terry Pratchett? I suspect perhaps not, but if you're ever in the mood for smart satirical fantasy, you may like the Discworld series, especially the novels involving Sam Vimes.

Huw, I can understand why you are writing in the five and zero star categories. With age I have become more discerning, and I am usually happy with what I read. This leads me to give many five star ratings. When I am disappointed, however, I find that a zero star rating comes easily.

Huw Evans Hi John, thank you for enfriending me. If, perchance, you read any of my reviews I am trying to write in the five and zero star categories. All reviews are personal and hope to convey what an individual book or series means to me. Am happy to discuss anything - gently. Kind regards, Huw
