“Sì perché l'autorità dell'opinione di mille nelle scienze non val per una scintilla di ragione di un solo, sì perché le presenti osservazioni spogliano d'autorità i decreti de' passati scrittori, i quali se vedute l'avessero, avrebbono diversamente determinato.
For in the sciences the authority of thousands of opinions is not worth as much as one tiny spark of reason in an individual man. Besides, the modern observations deprive all former writers of any authority, since if they had seen what we see, they would have judged as we judge.”

I'll have to learn more about how he came to be acknowledged as the father of modern French criminal investigation. I also need to read more of Terry Pratchett's novels.

Interesting blog entry on Boltanski! There's also the phenomenon of the "crook turned copper." I'm not sure whether we've discussed this already, so pardon my memory lapse if we have. But have you read anything about Vidocq? He influenced 19th century French literature as well. Also, are you a fan of Terry Pratchett? I suspect perhaps not, but if you're ever in the mood for smart satirical fantasy, you may like the Discworld series, especially the novels involving Sam Vimes.
John, no problem whatsoever - you had me messaged at the time.On another note, i admire your reading capacity - you go through books at tornado-speed and i have noticed some interesting titles too - thank you.

Maria, we exchanged messages a couple of weeks back, but I just realised that I hadn't replied to this comment! No problem with Portuguese phrasing, if it ever happens!
All the best,
John

Thanks for connecting with me on Goodreads. I looked for your books on Amazon; they look interesting. I see that Achebe is one of your favorite authors - mine too.
Thank you for the friend request, John.If in any time my reviews have a funny phrasing, i am sorry - english is not my 1st language and sometimes comes to mind the Portuguese phrasing rather than the English one.

With age I have become more discerning, and I am usually happy with what I read. This leads me to give many five star ratings. When I am disappointed, however, I find that a zero star rating comes easily.
Hi John, thank you for enfriending me. If, perchance, you read any of my reviews I am trying to write in the five and zero star categories. All reviews are personal and hope to convey what an individual book or series means to me. Am happy to discuss anything - gently. Kind regards, Huw
