It never fails to refresh my excitement about the possibilities on the page and inspires me to keep writing. Or sometimes, if the book is less compelling, makes me understand why some things don't work so well on the page. Since every writer is unique, you always learn something new. I've loved researching Scots and British history and their different regions - and especially discovering about the beautiful Selkie or seal people myths. Writing a book is an adventure because you never know quite where it will take you. In Return to Fourwinds I visited Madrid, a really beautiful city, and was able to find out for the first time something about the brave smuggling ring that a relative was part of to save many lives in WW2.(less)

Are there mermaids and seal people descendants living in the US today?

How legends sometimes hold lost history.

When I first heard the legend of the seal people I was struck by how sad it was. Selkies are seals in the water but become human on land. If someone steals their sealskin they can never go home to the sea again. I was amazed to find out from Gaelic historian John MacAulay that behind this legend lay very real people: kayakers in sealskin canoes and jackets w Read more of this blog post »

“How strange it was to...watch her walk round the table and the chairs by the fire, pick up my shells from the shore along the mantelpiece, and smile at everything and examine it as if she were reading the story of my life in the intervening years. She ran her hand along the book spines on the shelves, stopping to greet an old friend as she took it down to read a little.”
Elisabeth Gifford, The Sea House

“in books you may visit places that you will never see with your own eyes”
Elisabeth Gifford, The Lost Lights of St Kilda

“for this much i have learned, the only things that stand are love and forgiveness, they are an island of hope glimpsed and not glimpsed among the pounding waves of the storms, but there still, always there, the lights guiding us home”
