Peter D. Brown is a Maine-based author of historical fiction with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for preserving history. His writing relies on a deep commitment to historical accuracy while aiming to illuminate stories of the oppressed or misunderstood. Presented alongside proclivities typical of the human condition, he challenges his readers to confront uncomfortable truths and engage with the complexities of the human experience.

Retired now from formal enterprise, Peter lives in a quiet, pastoral township in Maine with his loving wife and two dogs, where he enjoys ample quietude and peace to gain inspiration, sort out his thoughts, and bring them to life.

Through his work, Peter hopes to promote thoughtful conversations ab

Such a good question!
I became passionately motivated to write I AM JAYVYN after Florida's State Board of Education announced its plans to change the way African American history would be taught in its schools.
Their decision was based on Gov. DeSantis's "Stop Woke" agenda, which also prohibits including any reference to Critical Race Theory in its schools, among other measures of censorship.
Florida's not alone. As of the date of publication, 18 US states have active laws regulating or prohibiting discussions of racial prominence in history, and 5 more states have similar legislation pending.
You can't simply distort or obfuscate history to suit your personal narrative.
In my view, these measures are especially harmful to Afro Americans, who were already profoundly harmed by the transatlantic slave trade. But, in truth, everyone is harmed when the facts of history are tampered with. Students don't learn reality; people forget, and we become estranged from the lessons that keep us from repeating the mistakes of our past.
I thought it was a good time to recreate the truth of this history by writing a book that tells the story of enslavement through the experience of one of its victims. Though I personally could never fully know what that experience would be like, it was the facts of history that informed my writing.
Jayvyn's character is warm and profoundly human. I think you'll agree that he embodies the best of what our species has to offer. It is only the color of his skin that condemned him to a fate he neither chose nor deserved.
The book further, and rightfully, recognizes that enslaved Africans made some of the most significant contributions to the founding of the United States of America, a fact that should be fully recognized and celebrated.
My hope is that through this book, readers will be reminded of the fallacy of racism and the importance of striving to overcome the flaws of our past and find a better way.(less)
