And the answer is... Location, location, location! By that I mean it had a perfect storm of circumstances that happened just at the right time.

You had a large population of goth interested folks looking for a new home at the same time you had many folks from medieval re-enactment (renaissance faires, Society of Creative Anachronism, Live Action Role Playing Games, etc) searching for the same thing.

Steampunk had already appeared in literature, movies, and similar areas and some folks say something shiny AND intelligent... how could we not be drawn into it. It brought so many things we love into one thing and it had the feel of rebellion with manners. So we could be punk with refinement. It was the best of all worlds.

And once we started to plumb the depths and realized that it had no end... we just couldn't stop!(less)
