"Indelible" Revisions

I finished my 2nd round edits in 1 week. All 432 pages. I caught one continuity problem, my editor another. Funny how things slide past even the most vigilant eye when a manuscript becomes so familiar. Kaylen and Brian and the rest of the characters in this book are like family members now. Some are family you want to be around, others are the ones you see coming and want to make a run for the door with some unexpected but suddenly all-important errand.

"Indelible"

1 day to go before the release date for "Indelible."
I'm working on publicity with Mundania Press, and a new website with Paula Johnson. Until the new website is completed, my old one is still up and running, and I post to it on a regular basis.
It's a frantic, exciting time.

Making the "Indelible" Series Successful

When I read the first book in a series, I want to feel that I'm invested enough in the characters to want to go forward with them on their journey. What I've done with "Indelible" is put Brian and Kaylen onto the path of discovery: self, emotional, even career. This will not be a static world where everything remains basically the same, with only cases needing to be solved. Relationships evolve, careers go through peaks and valleys, old scars have to reopen in order to heal, and riddles left unsolved will slowly be answered.

I want to take readers with me on the emotional roller-coaster of their lives.

Left Coast Crime

I'll be attending this year, since it takes place in Portland, OR, my home town. Really looking forward to this. "Indelible" will be available in the book room, and I'll be at the event for the duration.

In Limbo, and not.

"Swift Justice," the second book in the "Indelible" series has a partial and synopsis under consideration. While waiting to find out the fate of this book that took so much out of me to write, I decided to do myself a favor of sorts and pull out a manuscript that my then-agent tried to market as a hardback psychological suspense. I had always seen myself as a paperback writer, and the editors' feedback seconded that feeling. My agent and I parted company when she was unable to sell it, and I shelved that big book for a long time. As I go through it now, updating, editing and cutting, I can see how much my writing style has changed. I've cut the first 131 pages down to 97, including throwing out one entire chapter. I believe "Night Shadows" will be not only shorter and tighter, but a smoother read by the time I get through with it. None of the suspense will be cut out of it, and all the quirky characters will remain. I always did like a challenge.

News on upcoming publications

I haven't been posting here for a while. Not because I haven't had plenty going on, but rather because I've had a lot too much on my plate.

However, after a hiccup for "Swift Justice," a new editor is now hard at work, and a publication date will be announced soon.

"Night Shadows" is halfway through its revision process. I've still got at least one more draft to work through until that one is ready for editing, but as soon as I rolled over that 300 page mark and had shaved close to 70 pages off it in the process, I knew I was really getting a handle on this once very large book. The critique group, my trusted fellow writers of the Pacific Online Writers community are with me on this revision journey and providing invaluable input.

The title of Book 3 in the "Indelible" series will be titled "Swift Retribution." As Brian Swift has demonstrated in books 1 & 2, he's determined to put both his professional and private lives on a more even keel. In book 3, he'll be trying to solve his brother's murder and discover more about his past. Kaylen Roberts will open a new club and take on more challenges, herself.

I'll have more information on my website shortly. 2017 is going to be a very busy and fulfilling year, as I also joined the board of the local Sisters in Crime chapter this year.

Updated website with teasers and 1st chapter

My website updates have been completed and the site looks great with a new look at www.heatherames.com. Not only is there a teaser for "Swift Justice," but the first chapter's there to read. There's another teaser for "Night Shadows." Paula Johnson did the updates. We chatted on the phone a couple of times and I did my homework to get her what she needed. New books, and a new look that reflects the tone of these books.
