Hi! I am an Australian writer who enjoys reading as much as (perhaps even more than) writing.

In 2000, I won the Queensland Premier's Literary Award for Best Emerging Queensland Author for my novel The Bone Flute (under the author name N A Bourke) which was released by UQP in 2001 and subsequently shortlisted in the Commonwealth Writers Awards. My children’s picture book, What the Sky Knows (Illustrated by Stella Danalis), followed in May 2005 and was shortlisted for two separate categories in the 2006 Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards. A third novel, The True Green of Hope was released in August 2005. My most recently published adult novel is Dying in the First Person, released in May, 2016, through Transit Lounge, an

I’ve popped online to share some wonderful news, but I promise I’ll also get on top of this much-neglected site and start posting more regularly. Again. Or something.

So, about a month ago, the Norma K Hemming Award sh

“The words sink and rise along the streets, are breathed in and out by the citizens, are pressed like bombs into the hands of the children, and thrown against the walls of the city. And the walls of the world tremble and shudder. And the walls of the world fall down.”
Nike Sulway, Letters to Tiptree

Topics Mentioning This Author

“No coward soul is mine,
No trembler in the world's storm-troubled sphere...”
Emily Bronte

“I remembered that the real world was wide, and that a varied field of hopes and fears, of sensations and excitments, awaited those who had the courage to go forth into it's expanse, to seek real knowledge of life amidst it's perils.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“Like the children in fairy stories who have seen their parents make pacts with terrifying strangers, who have discovered that our fears are based on nothing but the truth, but who come back fresh from marvellous escapes and take up their knives and forks, with humility and good manners, prepared to live happily ever after -- like them, dazed and powerful with secrets, I never said a word”
Alice Munro, Selected Stories

“people who believe in miracles do not make much fuss when they actually encounter one”
Alice Munro, Selected Stories

“Conversations are efforts toward good relations. They are an elementary form of reciprocity. They are the exercise of our love for each other. They are the enemies of our loneliness, our doubt, our anxiety, our tendencies to abdicate. To continue to be in good conversation over our enormous and terrifying problems is to be calling out to each other in the night. If we attend with imagination and devotion to our conversations, we will find what we need; and someone among us will act—it does not matter whom—and we will survive.”
