I'm ashamed to use Goodreads to share my opinion about Caren Beilin's SEA, POISON because what could make less sense than talking about this book on a website like Goodreads, where we literally give star ratings to works of art, star ratings 1-5, not even decimals are allowed like they let you do on StoryGraph (on StoryGraph, this book has 84 reviews; to be clear, this is a 5-star read for me, whatever the maximum amount of stars I can give, decimals or no). This book is a work of art. It took my breath away and made my brain work again. It made me realize that my brain hasn't even been working, maybe, that perhaps it has not even been working for some time. About 30 pages in I had to take a break and seriously consider quitting writing, which happens sometimes when I read books that I can't imagine ever being smart or funny or interesting enough to write, I can't imagine what it took to put a novel together like this. But I loved the experience of reading SEA, POISON so much that I did go back and finish it in a state I can only describe as raputurous. I'm a newly published author and am generally too deep into writing to bail on it now, I think, so I'm mostly confident I won't quit in disgrace due to my own limitations as a writer. Instead I will go read the rest of Beilin's books and the books she references in her books so maybe I can one day write a book even a quarter as good as SEA, POISON.

I'm new to Goodreads. SEA, POISON is one of my new favorite books, one of the best books I have ever read in my life. I don't know Caren Beilin and no one has put me up to this. I feel like I am on drugs having just finished reading this book but I'm not, I'm just that energized by the reading experience. It is 9:05 in the morning where I live. It seems like the least I could do, having had this insane, charged experience reading this book, to contribute the 69th written review on Goodreads about it.
