Kansas City Emergency w/ A Woman and 6 Minor Abused Children

This is a very unusual request but as a child advocate, I cannot walk away from this:

I have a close friend in the KC Metro who has 6 children and currently living with her ex-husband is abusing her and their children relentlessly. She needs a safe home ASAP for a night or two and any help she can get for gas money and food to travel here to California this weekend if possible. I am begging anyone here to help if they can. She has sold items in her home and was able to raise $800 and needs around $500 more to get a trailer for her kids and her things as well as remainder of travel expenses. If you can help in any way, please, now is the time to pay it forward to someone who deserves it. This is particulary profound because this is the first time in 23 years that she is asking for help to get away. Her children are ages 2 through 17.

I can accept Paypal and credit card payments on her behalf or if you are local to KC, you could help her in person. She is desparate at this point and is asking God to help her through this. Message me directly at http://www.facebook.com/TemeculaChief or on my Fan page at http://www.facebook.com/CatchMeIfYouKnowHow or text me (I am severely hearing impaired) at (442) 2-CATCH-1/442-222-8241 or email me via http://www.catchmeifyouknowhow.com

StandUp for Kids Founder Charged With Child Sex Assault

Richard Koca, Sr., 69, the founder of a national charity for at-risk youth have been charged with
repeatedly sexually assaulting a child over a three year period.

According to ABC News station KMGH, he was charged in Aurora, Colo., last week in
connection with the child sexual assault case.

Between August 2009 and August 2012, Koca is accused of committed felony charges of sexual assault
on a child by a person in a position of trust. Court documents further describe his behavior as
a “pattern of abuse” according to KMGH.

A court order was issued on Monday “suppressed” the charges after the news report from
KMGH. The Arapahoe County district attorney declined to comment on the charges.

More potential victims could come forward for the case and the Aurora police department has
told KMGH that investigators are making preparations question them.

The national non-profit StandUp For Kids, whose objective is to help homeless youth around
the country was founded by Koca who resides in Aurora, Colorado. Calls to the headquarters remained
unanswered, and the organization’s website was no longer accessible. In an old message on the organization’s website (1990), Koca renounces child abuse and defines the mission of the organization, which is to offer means to homeless youth.

Koca’s next court appearance is on Sept. 21, at 10:30 a.m. and is represented by the public
defender's office. He is being held in Arapahoe County jail on $250,000 bond.

What Your Teens Hide From You Online

Believe it or not, parents lag behind teens in internet usage and are unable to track some of their online behaviors.
MacAfee, an online security software maker, funded a 2,017-person survey to push a product that helps parents monitor their kids online.

According to the report released on Monday, 70% of teens "hide their online behavior" from parents up from 45% in 2010, the group says.

Some hidden behaviors exhibit normal teenage traits such as pornographic (32%) and violent (43%) content online. But there are a few surprises including fifteen percent of teens having hacked into social networks and twelve percent into email accounts. Face to face meetings with persons met on the internet are at 12% while 16% have used their phones to cheat on tests at school.

According to MacAfee, parents have no knowledge of these behaviors. A “stalking application” is now in discreet use on Facebook social media. Writing on a blog post, McAfee's Robert Siciliano says that having grown up in an online world, teens are more online savvy than their parents and parents must keep abreast of the current trends on the internet. The online universe is dynamic and parents must take up the challenge of discovering new devices and resources that teens are using online today.

Using his own example as a parent of two young girls, he participates in their online activities guiding them on how to use the internet. Scilliano hopes that parents will become more involved by using this kind of technology to protect their kids online.
Instant message conversations and social media can now be monitored to prevent access to specific websites while monitoring the kids’ behavorial tendencies. This is used as the sales pitch for MacAfee Safe Eyes.

[Update: The blog has since withdrawn the McAfee Safe Eyes pitch.]
Location monitoring devices are used by 10% of parents including knowledge of teens’ passwords (44%) and online control (50%).

However, there are opponents of this approach to online security for your teens. Appearing on CNN in 2010, Justin Patchin, a criminal justice professor and co-director of the Cyber Bullying Research Center opined that it is not a good idea for parents to spy on their kids furtively, because sooner or later they're going to find something they have to tackle them about, and this could destroy the other forms of interaction. While monitoring behavior is essential, McAfee also encourages parents to be upfront with their children if they decide to monitor their behaviors.

The report indicates that if teens knew that their parents were watching, half of them would reconsider their online activities.
1,004 teens aged between 13 and 17 and 1.013 parents were interviewed in May through research company TRU.
According to the survey results, the following is a list of behaviors the teens said they engaged in:

1. Browser History Deletion (53%)
2. Log Off When Parent Approaches (46%)
3. Conceal or Delete IMs or Videos (34%)
4. Misinformation About Online Activities (23%)
5. Unrestricted Access to Computer (23%)
6. WAP-Enabled Mobile Device Usage (21%)
7. Limit Content to Friends’ Accessibility (20%)
8. Use Private Browsing Settings (20%)
9. Concealed E-mail Address Unknown to Parents (15%)
10. Disguised Social Network Profiles (9%)

Students AT Connecticut High School Develop Anti-Bullying App

In Connecticut , students at a high school have developed an app to help reduce bullying. According to CNN affiliate WTIC, it can be used to report experience and the witnessing bullying. Whereas the user remains anonymous, the information is relayed to administrators allowing them to study the trends and frequency of occurrences. Students at Metropolitan Business Academy in New Haven, Connecticut, designed the app as a way for kids to help other kids.

Meet the Author @ Lifeway Christian Stores in Tustin, CA

There has never been an easy to read guide on how to protect your children online, until now, 'Catch Me If You Know How' was written by a man of faith, disabilities and who endured all of the unimaginable abuses in his childhood. With Travis Morgan's 20 years of Information Technology experience, he is now retired and wants to pay-it-forward by helping to protect our most vulnerable and valuable assets, our children. This life changing event has Mr Morgan on a fast track to get his book to every school and library acros the world. Parents need to be educated on how the computer works and discover what it is being used for.

I have donated my books to many SoCal library systems and also do give-aways. There is currently a 20 free paperback copy giveaway of my book at GoodReads.com which ends at the end of this month. Additionally, 10 % of all of my book sales are donated to charities that help at-risk and victimized children. You can see the list on the website at www.CatchMeIfYouKnowHow.com . That is the one check I love to write the most. I also do volunteer work TAALK.org and am currently in their Child Sex Abuse Prevention Program to speak and spread the word and help people discover if there's someone who may be in danger or victimized.

Travis Morgan has a book signing event (Meet the Author) at Lifeway Christian Stores this month in Tustin on the 22nd of September. If you could please post this in your bulletin board or clergy announcements and youth pastors, it would be greatly appreciated. We welcome everyone who has a concern about a child or other loved ones regardless of our faiths. We are all here to serve others and I have finally found that in what I now do.

Let's Save Some More Children!

Book Gives Straight Scoop on Detecting, Avoiding Harmful Web Sites
Endorsed By Victim Advocates and Child Protection Groups

After kids unwrapped their new laptops and CPUs this holiday season, for many of them, the next act was to jump online. In plain language, Catch Me If You Know How (Internet Edition) unravels the mysteries of how users get trapped into visiting harmful websites, what some people do to hide deliberate visits to those sites, and exactly what parents can do to protect their kids.

“This is about knowing all the basics of detection and prevention and putting them to work,” says author and computer expert Travis Morgan. “It is not about costly software or complicated security measures you need a PhD to understand.”

Cookies, browser settings, Facebook security, and file-sharing are among the dozens of key topics covered in the short book, which includes a complete glossary of terms.

Morgan’s easily readable and practical book is endorsed by a number of well-known victim advocates such as Denise Brown (sister of Nicole Brown Simpson), and Dr. Pamela Pine (Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse), who notes: “In clear, concise and easy-to-understand language, Travis Morgan provides guidance about the use and misuse of computers and helps us all protect kids (and the rest of us!) from being exposed to harmful materials on-line.”
